The process of sistering ribs involves bending new rib material that extends from the keelson to the sheer-line and nailing it in place alongside the existing rib. Rotted ribs are usually damaged only at the tops, which can be replaced by cutting below the rot at a sharp angle and scarfing in a fresh piece of appropriately shaped material.

Mask the planking ether side of the rabbited rib, epoxy it together, sand out smooth, stain to match the patina of the rib, and varnish.

Every second rib will need to be repaired, and it may take a week or two to splice new ones. If you cannot find them, you can try welding them but chances are they will crack again. The best way to replace them is to replace them.

The author also mentions using a belt sander to dish out the back side of the rib around the crack and shape a new piece of cedar slightly longer than the repair area. The cracked rib and surrounding area was flexing approximately 1 under load, and the author’s first repair attempt was to braze it using a MAPP gas torch.
