5. Park for Free. Cruising is a vacation value, for sure, but driving to your cruise is a money saver as well. Not only are you saving money on airfare and bag fees, but you have the opportunity to save on parking too. Hotels in many ports offer some sort of “cruise and stay” package where you can park your car at the hotel for the duration of your cruise for free provided you’re staying there at least one night before or after you sail. Some hotels even offer free or discount shuttles to and from the cruise terminal. In Port Canaveral, nearly a dozen hotels from Holiday Inns to Best Westerns to Four Points by Sheraton offer cruise and stay packages. Spend a few minutes online looking for packages at hotels near your cruise terminal and you’ll find similar arrangements no matter where you depart.
6. Or Pre-Pay for Parking. If you’re not staying at a hotel where you can park for the length of your cruise, you’re probably parking at a deck or lot at the cruise terminal, and with some planning you can save on this too. While you can just drive up to the cruise terminal, take your parking ticket and find a spot, you can save a little money and a lot of stress by pre-paying for parking. Pre-paying often comes with a reserved spot or reserved section, and it’s often cheaper by a few dollars a day than paying for parking when you arrive. A quick search for “parking cruise terminal (Your Cruise City)” will come up with a number of parking lots and decks where you can reserve your spot and pay in advance.

Why is Charleston port closing?
After failing to secure a long-term deal with Carnival, the authority did not renew the cruise line’s contract, which runs out this year, and ended its quest to build the new terminal hub. Instead, the ports operator decided to sell the waterfront property and turned to an out-of-state developer to draw up plans. Without afull-time customer, Union Pier is expected to dock a variety of pleasure ships making short-term, port-of-call stops. The port’s currentdeal with the city still allows 104 cruise ships per year, with up to 3,500 passengers per ship.
Los Angeles-based developer Lowe’s high-density mix of waterfront condominiums, office space and retail shops — with a few parks and green space sprinkled in — drew opposition from conservationists and preservationists. Theplan was scrapped last summer in favor of thecommunity-driven processcurrently underway.
The team behind the new process, led by the Joe Riley Center for Livable Communities at the College of Charleston and Boston-based design firm Sasaki, said it’s continuing to gather feedback from the community about what it wants and doesn’t want at Union Pier with “the understanding that the cruise terminal would stay on the site,” said Ali Moriarty, assistant director of the Riley Center. “And we haven’t been told otherwise.”

What do you do with your car while on a cruise?
Terminal Parking. When you book your cruise, you’ll be given the option of using cruise parking in Miami. At the terminal, there are parking garages specifically for guests of the cruise line. This sounds like a great option, as you’ll be right at the port. You’ll drop your car off and get straight onto the cruise ship, ready to depart.
However, those parking garages come with high fees. If proximity to the dock is a deal breaker for you, you may want to consider this. However, if you would rather save that money to spend on drinks by the pool during your vacation, you may want to choose a different option. Can you get parking that’s just as safe and secure without the high price tag?
Off-Site Parking. If you don’t leave your car at home, and you don’t want to pay an exorbitant rate to park at the port, what’s your other option? The answer is off-site parking. There are plenty of Miami cruise parking lots that are off-site, and a lot cheaper than the port options. It’s amazing how much you can save in parking fees once you move away from the port itself.
