How To Mount A Fishfinder On A Kayak?

Installing a fishfinder on a kayak is a simple and effective way to enhance your kayak fishing game. The installation process involves three simple steps: rigging the fishfinder, mounting the transducer, and powering the fish finder. The video provides a detailed look at fish finder technology, mounting a fish finder to a kayak, different ways to fit a transducer to a kayak, and options for powering a fish finder.

One of the simplest ways to mount a transducer to a kayak is with the Yakattack Switchblade, which is a pre-built arm mount that simplifies the process. If your kayak has a built-in recess for a scupper mount, it may be an option for some. Most fishing kayaks now come equipped with dedicated transducer mounting options or removeable dry pods that keep your battery, transducer, and graph all in one convenient location.

Fishing finders can seem daunting, but they can be installed in three easy steps. First, use a gallon zip-lock bag to place the transducer inside and fill part-way with water. Then, place the plastic bag in the considered area while the kayak is on the water.

There are two options for installing a fish finder on the inside hull of your kayak: using Selleys All Clear glue, or using a different adhesive method. The video provides a comprehensive guide on how to install a fish finder on a kayak and how to make it a valuable tool for your fishing adventures.

Similarly, as Mat continued to explain, “Transducers should be placed on the right, not the left side of the hull, because most props go clockwise, which will push water up under the transducer if it’s on the left. Even though props are further back, they still create a vortex which can muddy the water around the transducer.”

Another interesting tip that both Dallas and Laurie agreed on is that the transducer should be angled down slightly towards the water – despite the manual’s clear instructions to keep it at a perfect 90 degree angle with the hull. As mentioned, the bracket should be placed so the transducer is in line with the bottom of the hull – and Dallas actually used a ruler to make sure this was perfect – but then it’s best to tilt the transducer on its bracket. The reason the manual doesn’t tell you to do this is simple: it’s American. Mat explained.

“Traditionally, we’d have the transducer flat and that’s the advice usually given – but that’s only perfect for the US bass fishermen who only use their sounder at rest. Most Kiwis are hunters. We’re looking for fish while we’re moving, whereas in the States they often just travel straight to a destination. So, we angle the transducer slightly down – two degrees is enough. This keeps the transducer parallel with the water when you’re moving. Boats ride nose-up, which means the transducer will go a bit down anyway, but a little more helps.”
