This tutorial demonstrates how to fit a canoe seat in just a few simple steps, improving comfort and efficiency during long trips. Customizing your seat can be done by purchasing seat backs, seat frames, or pads and cushions from aftermarket canoe seats. These affordable, aftermarket Kayaks equipped with backrests can accommodate gel and foam seat cushions, making them even more comfortable.
Additionally, upgrading the seats is a 30- to 40-minute modification, and paddlers may opt to replace seats due to wear or rot. One easy way to add comfort to your canoe is by adding padding. You can purchase foam pads that fit directly onto the seats or use seat pads that come with the canoe seat. Canoe seats vary widely, from simple foam cushions to ergonomic reclining seats that take seconds to install and remove. Most are fairly affordable and can double as seating for stadiums, camping, or other outdoor activities.
Another option is to wear a personal floatation device and pick up an inexpensive seat cushion for comfort. A GCI Outdoor stadium seat with a foam pad can help ease lower back fatigue after several hours sitting upright in a canoe. Tie in your seats with a good portage yoke with pads, or tape another piece of foam taped to a thwart for fishing.
Paddlers may choose to replace seats due to wear or rot, or simply for something more comfortable for long days on the water. The simplest and most comfortable seats I’ve used have been the laced seats on Nova Craft, made by a third party and sold by a third party. Padding a bucket seat is simple and inexpensive, requiring a closed-cell camping pad, spray adhesive, and a utility knife.

Where should a heavy person sit on a canoe?
To avoid this issue, try to balance the weight evenly in the canoe and keep a low center mass. Don’t try to stand up in the canoe while out on the water. If you must move around in the canoe, stay low and concentrate on balancing the weight with those around you. If you are alone in the canoe, sit in the middle. If there are two people in the canoe, have one sit in the back and one sit in the front, with the heavier person or more experienced paddler in the rear of the boat, called the stern. When paddling, try to stay over the centerline of the canoe and keep your back straight. If you are leaning over, make sure that all of the people in the canoe are not leaning over to look at the same place and at the same time. It can be exciting to look at something in the water next to you, such as a fish, but if everyone leans over too far to look, you might just end up joining the fish in the water!
If the body of water you are gliding on has a current, such as a river or creek, it is much easier to paddle in the direction of the water flow than to fight the current going the opposite way. The water will also push you in the direction of the current so you will get to your downriver destination faster.
If you do find the need to go upriver against the current, pick your route carefully. Look for areas where the water is calmer and there are few rapids, rocks, or tree snags. You will need to expend a lot more energy to paddle upriver, so communicate with your team to make sure you are paddling as efficiently as possible. In life, going with the flow is often the same… it is usually easier to do something the way it has been done before than to change it.
How to make a canoe more comfortable?
Using a lifejacket for a seat cushion is a common and foolish decision for anyone paddling a canoe. A canoe is an inherently unstable craft, and it’s unlikely that the lifejacket will be located in a panic if overturned. Wear the personal floatation device and pick up an inexpensive seat cushion for comfort.
After several hours sitting upright in a canoe, you might begin to feel some lower back fatigue. A seat-back clips or straps to the canoe seat and offers essential back support and extra comfort as well. They, too, can be found in almost any outdoor or sporting goods store.
Once you have made your canoe more comfortable, the next step is adding fishing accessories. A small gas or electric motor is a major luxury item, but it can make canoe fishing much more productive by getting from fishing spot to fishing spot more quickly. A small trolling motor can also help hold the canoe’s position in the windy conditions.
A small, portable fishfinder is another helpful accessory. Most portable units operate on small, consumer-grade batteries with suction cup-mounted transducers that are ideal for canoes.

What is more comfortable sit in or sit-on-top kayak?
There’s no debate here—sit-on-tops are more comfortable! You’re not confined inside the boat so you have more freedom of leg movement. You can even stand up for a change, which can make a big difference on a long day of paddling.
The seats of sit-on-tops can get, as Ken says, “downright luxurious.” Many sit-on-tops offer a height-adjustable seat, giving you even more seating options.
The value of the features of sit-on-tops vs. sit-ins is very subjective. Deciding which are most important for you goes along with our first point above—what type of paddling do you want to do?
What is the most comfortable seat material?
Leather: Leather car seat covers are luxurious and stylish, and they offer superior comfort. The natural breathability of leather makes it a great choice for warmer climates, and it is also very durable and easy to clean.
Vinyl: Vinyl is a synthetic material that is highly durable and easy to clean. It is also water and stain-resistant, making it ideal for families with children.
Faux Leather: Faux leather is an affordable alternative to genuine leather, and it is just as stylish and comfortable. It is also easier to care for and can be wiped down with a damp cloth.

How to sit comfortably in a canoe?
All right so just a little something to keep in mind when you are in the sitting. Position with your legs. Straight.
What are the disadvantages of a sit in kayak?
Sit-inside kayak cons. The biggest downside of sit-inside recreational kayaks has to do with floatation and ease ofrescue.
Most sit-in recreational kayaks feature large cockpits for comfort and ease of entry. These large cockpits can take in a lot of water should you flip your kayak. Touring kayaks have bulkheads to limit the amount of water getting into the boat. Most recreational kayaks don’t have bulkheads, or may have a single bulkhead behind the seat. This means if you do swamp, you’ll have a lot of water to deal with.
It can be difficult to climb back into a swamped recreational kayak and tough to get the water out if you do. Paddling a swamped boat without a front bulkhead can be next to impossible. For these reasons, sit-inside recreational kayaks are best paddled close to shore, where a quick swim to the beach can get you safely emptied out and back on the water.
Touring kayaks with two bulkheads and hatches are easier to rescue than recreational kayaks with a single bulkhead or none at all. This makes them safer to paddle far from shore. If you paddle a touring kayak in open water, you’ll need to learn some specialized rescue skills to ensure you can get back into the boat safely should you capsize, but it’s well worth the effort if you plan to use your kayak for coastal paddling and camping.
What is the best material for canoe seats?
Durability. The best canoe seats are able to withstand constant exposure to sun, rain, and wind. High-quality nylon or polyester are the best materials due to their resistance to elements.
This is where paying up for well-known brands really pays off. While you may be able to find a cheaper option on Amazon, I highly doubt it will compete with the best canoe seats in terms of longevity.
Adjustability. We also recommend making sure your seat is adjustable. We all have different bodies, and the best canoe seat is the one that fits your body.
What is the most stable body position while canoeing?
The most stable place for a person to be in a canoe is laying down in the bottom of the boat. This position puts all your mass as low as possible which makes it the least likely to roll over. The next best position is sitting on the bottom on the centerline.
Is there a weight limit for canoeing?
A canoe’s passenger capacity is actually more based on its overall weight capacity. After all, a canoe could hold 3 small children that weigh 60 lbs each or a fully grown adult weighing 180 lbs.
In the end, it all comes down to the weight inside the boat, and of course, the amount of room you have in the cockpit. After all, you don’t want to be sardined in there together.
The Canoe’s Weight Capacity. When figuring out how many people a canoe could hold, you should pay close attention to the canoe’s maximum weight capacity.
All boats have a maximum weight capacity, and this number indicates how much passenger and gear weight you can have in the canoe at any given time. Going over this limit will cause the canoe to sink into the water, making it extremely hard to paddle and steer.
Can you be too heavy for a canoe?
Weight Limit. While a canoe has a maximum load capacity of 450 kg, in practice this doesn’t mean that if there are two paddlers, you simply divide this capacity by two.
As a general rule, the maximum weight of a single paddler in one of our canoes is 18½ stone / 120 kg.
Weight Distribution. Another practical consideration is the difference in weight between the front and back seat of the canoe. If in the back seat (the heaviest paddler is always at the back) is, say, a parent who weighs 110 kg, it would not be wise for them to come just with their 10-year-old weighing only 32 kg. In this case, what we would advise is to persuade another adult to accompany you and then the two adults can sit front and back and the child can go in the middle.
“If you’re looking for some fun, get away from Shrewsbury and explore the Shropshire countryside. Canoeing is a great way to do so without having to be super fit! There are loads of companies that can help you hire out equipment/boats etc., but I recommendHire A Canoeas they were incredible when I last visited!”

Great idea! I recently spent the $43 for the inflatable Thermarest lumbar pillow that a lot of paddlers use. While it is pricey, I will say that it does a good job and the adjustability is nice. I’m all about saving money and making your own stuff from scratch. Keep posting articles and thanks for sharing the great ideas!
Excellent hack. A word of caution re: the tape. I used FLEX tape to cover two holes on the seat of my tractor. The seams curled up one day and deposited adhesive residue on the seat of my shorts. SheWhoMustBeObeyed was unhappy…very unhappy. If I put heavy duty tape on a backrest, I’d make sure it ended on the sides, and not on the part that contacted my back.
