How To Hoist The Mainsail Sailing Yacht?

This video explains how to hoist the mainsail on a Lagoon and similar catamarans, covering the process from leaving the dock to setting sail. The mainsail plays a crucial role in powering a sailboat, and hoisting at the mast allows the user to bring their full weight to bear, allowing them to raise the sail two-thirds of the way up before resorting. The video also covers the steps involved in hoisting the mainsail, jibe it, tack it, trim it, reef it, and control it with the main halyard, outhaul, mainsheet, and kicker.

The yacht’s engine should be running during the hoist, and hoisting the mainsail on a mooring and sailing away without using the engine requires considerable expertise. The mainsail should be rolled from bottom to top, attached to the halyard ring, prepared for the sail bag, and checked for shackle attachment.

After placing the boat in irons, open the clutch or jammer on the vang to ensure smooth hoisting. The main halyard is always attached to the sail but retained by a line rolling hitched to it and taken to a pad eye on the cabin top. If the halyard goes up smoothly, try a different halyard or get a different one. The standard procedure involves the helmsman using the diesel engine to hold the bow into the wind while the mainsail is hoisted by another person.
