It is one of the busiest Cycladic ports since it receives numerous ferries and cruise ships on a daily basis. As of 2021, the New Port welcomes both conventional and high-speed ferries. Before that year, high-speed boats were docking at the old port.
Can you go to Delos on your own?
You can only get to Delos on a day trip by ferry from another island. Most commonly the point of departure is Mykonos, but there are also day trips to Delos from the islands of Naxos and Paros. There are no hotels or other accommodation providers on the island, the only inhabitants are the caretakers and archaeologists. There is no airport on the island.
If you have your own yacht, you can get yourself to Delos. Sail to the island, and simply pay at the ticket office to tour the site and museum. If like me you do not have your own yacht, for what seems to me a very reasonable price you can take one of a number of private cruises to the island – and even visit nearby Rhenia Island too.
At 8.45 am the ferry leaves the port in Naxos town and sets sail for Delos. You will have three hours to explore the island before heading to Mykonos where you have three hours to explore the old town of Mykonos. I can recommend visiting the Mykonos Archaeology Museum. This ticket only covers your ferry to Delos and Mykonos and return to Naxos. It does not include a guide, or the entry to the archaeological site and museum on Delos. Can you walk from port in Mykonos to town?
The New port of Mykonos is located in Tourlos area which is about 2 km north of Mykonos Town. It is a 30 minutes walking distance but not recommended. Especially if you are carrying luggage since you walk along a busy main road without a pavement!

Furthermore, the New Port is connected to “Chora” and the Old Port by Taxi, public Bus, and Sea Bus. The main Taxi stand is situated exactly across and left as you disembark from the ferries (check the map here). The Bus station is also in the same area, just next to the Taxis. The Sea Bus station is a little bit further away towards the exit of the port (check the map here).
During high season it is highly recommended to take either the public bus or the sea bus to Mykonos town since taxis are almost impossible to find!

Greek mythology says that the island was the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, and it became an important port and religious center in 1400 BC. Statues, sanctuaries and temples were built, and their ruins (many unearthed in 1873) are now scattered around the island and on display in a museum.
You can walk around and see them by yourself (take comfortable, flat shoes, avoid flip flops and high-heels), or may choose to go with a tour guide.

If your cruise ship drops anchor, you may have to wait a little while for the tender boats, but once on dry land, you are right in the heart of Mykonos town centre.
Whether your ship docks in the new port or drops anchor nearby, once in Mykonos, it is pretty straightforward to get around. For that reason, excursions often aren’t needed, and many cruise guests choose to explore independently.
