To obtain a towing endorsement from the US Coast Guard, one must submit an application form and fee to the Coast Guard. The Towing Endorsement course offers an alternative to the traditional towing endorsement, which is required for vessels operating beyond near-coastal waters or on international voyages. To obtain a towing endorsement, one can either study independently before taking the towing endorsement exam at one of the USCG Regional Exam Centers or take a course at a USCG.
The USCG Towing Endorsement is required for those engaged in towing a disabled vessel for payment, such as US Sea Tow or Tow Boat operators. To obtain a new endorsement, one must hold an unexpired Medical Certificate or submit a Medical Certificate. The Auxiliary Sail Endorsement is required for operating an inspected sailing vessel. This endorsement allows the licensed Master to carry 7 or more passengers.
To add a Sailing Endorsement to a Masters Inland or Mate Near Coastal License, one must document at least 180 days on a sail or auxiliary sailing vessel. To qualify for the sailing endorsement, at least 360 of the total seatime must be on sailboats. A valid U.S. merchant mariner credential and a STCW Endorsement form certifying meeting minimum requirements of STCW are required.
To apply for a commercial endorsement, one must collect four certificates: a valid U.S. merchant mariner credential and a STCW Endorsement form.
