What percentage of people go on cruises alone?

Five percent of people who cruise aboard Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) more than 50-member cruise line brands are opting to go solo — a number that has roughly doubled compared to a decade ago, the organization found. ”This increase in demand has driven cruise lines to create more opportunities for solo cruise by retrofitting existing cabins to include solo cabins, providing ‘solo-only’ areas and more,” says Sally Andrews, vice president of strategic communications and public affairs for CLIA. “Some cruise lines have reported that as many as 20 percent of their passengers are traveling solo.”

Julie Sayer, an independent cruise and vacation consultant in Tampa, Florida, says solo cruising was a trend before the pandemic, but it has really taken off after COVID. “Just because (travelers) don’t have a significant other or travel companion, they still want to see the world and go.”

If that sounds like you, there’s likely a solo cabin out there with your name on it.

Do single people meet on cruises?

A theme cruise is another way to meet people with similar interests. Sailings focus on country music, popular TV shows, wine tasting, crafting and other hobbies and interests. Not only will you likely find plenty of singles ready to mingle, but it might also be easier to strike up a conversation, knowing you have at least one thing in common.

Chartered singles cruises take the work out of finding other singles because you’ll travel together in a group, often with a host to organize everyone. On larger ships, the charter will connect you with other group members through planned onboard meals, gatherings and activities. On smaller vessels, the tour company might charter the entire ship, so every passenger is single.

One word of caution here: It’s easy to think that meeting someone on a cruise ship takes all the inherent danger out of hanging out with strangers. You’re in a confined space surrounded by lots of other people. Sounds safe, right?

While cruising is, overall, incredibly safe, crime on board can happen. Like any form of travel, it’s best not to let your guard down, especially if you go off alone with someone you’ve just met.

Can you pay for 1 person on a cruise?

What is a single supplement?. It’s a fact— the price that you see for a cruise ship cabin is typically based on double occupancy. That means the price you are seeing is ½ the total cost of the stateroom. It is the cost paid by each person assuming that two people will be staying in a room, each paying the stated price. Essentially, if you want to travel alone, and have your own room…you pay double. More specifically you pay the Cruise/Port costs times 2, but the taxes and gratuities times 1.

The good news, solo cruising is on the rise and many cruise lines have added new features and accommodations for the solo traveler. Several cruise lines are including solo cabins and many are offering no or low single supplements for solo travelers.

What is a “single supplement?”. When you see the term “single supplement” it is a surcharge to recover revenue lost when a solo traveler occupies a room that could accommodate two guests. These single supplements (that amount added to the stated per person price) can range anywhere from not having to pay extra at all to 100 percent of the cruise and port fees for the second person who’s not occupying the stateroom.

The best part about being a solo cruiser is that you have your own private space to retreat to but still get to take part in all the exciting activities offered on board if you want. What you do or don’t do is completely up to you. You don’t have to consult with anyone, you’re in complete control. Proverbially speaking, who doesn’t like being the captain of their own ship!

Does a single person have to pay double for a cruise?

How much do cruise single supplements cost? Cruise lines typically charge an additional 50% to 100% of the fare, according to Fee. If a solo traveler’s fare costs $1,000, for example, they would pay between $500 and $1,000 extra for the supplement.

Why is it so expensive to cruise solo?

Most cruise ship staterooms are designed for two people. To make up for lost revenue from addons like drink packages, shore excursions, and other extras, some cruise lines will charge single travelers who book a double occupancy stateroom a “single supplement” fee on top of the base per person fare.

With luxury brand Silversea, this fee starts at an additional 25%. On cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, this charge can double the cruise fare. If you’re lucky, during select times of the year, Virgin Voyages will waive this charge, a spokesperson told Insider. But for the most part, expect to pay extra.

But this doesn’t mean you have to give up on the solo cruise vacation of your dreams. To meet the demands of these independent travelers, cruise lines like Oceania, Norwegian, and Virgin Voyages have designated staterooms for solo passengers with no additional fee.

What is the male to female ratio on singles cruises?

WHAT ARE THE AVERAGE MEN TO WOMEN RATIO ON A SINGLES CRUISE?. Most of our typical singles cruises are very close to a 50/50 ratio which is what we strive for and again will ultimately depend on who signs up for any particular cruise. We will do our best to get equal numbers of the opposite sex to join all cruises, however this cannot be guaranteed. No matter who ends up in your group, you are sure to make new friends and have the time of your life!

HOW MANY TRAVELERS ON AVERAGE ARE IN A SINGLES CRUISE GROUP?. The number of single travelers in each of our groups varies based on the destination, season and obviously the number of people who sign up, but is typically around 100 people (potentially plus or minus 50 singles). Many of our cruises exceed this number with the most popular cruise of the year being our Halloween sailing which can draw as many as 300 to 400 passengers.

WHAT ARE THE TIPPING GUIDELINES?. Although most cruise lines automatically add a daily gratuity charge to each passenger’s onboard account, the amount is always at the travelers’ discretion and they can increase or decrease the amount. As a guideline, most cruise lines recommend approximately $15.00 – $20.00 for a standard stateroom per day/per person to cover your waiter, assistant waiter, head waiter, room steward, etc. A 15%-20% gratuity will also be automatically added to any bar bill.
