How To Clean The Sails On A Model Ship?

To clean your model sailing ship, follow these essential tips and techniques:

1. Preserve fabric sails by cleaning them with a dry brush. If they are stained, use a slightly damp cloth to avoid soaking the fabric.

2. Regularly inspect your ship model for dust and dirt. If your sails have stains or dirt, wet a toothbrush with canvas cleaner and gently brush a small amount into them to brighten them up.

3. Remove the sails and wash them before re-rigging them. There are various recipes for washing cloth with nicotine stains on.

4. Regularly brush off loose dirt and dust from your model using a small medium paint brush and follow the brush with a small vacuum to keep dust from resettling.

5. Use practical rigging tips for model ship builders, focusing on both standing and running rigging techniques. Emphasize the importance of understanding different techniques for cleaning rigging that has sat collecting dust for many years.

6. Clean models with an airbrush spraying water and washing up liquid, then rinse by spraying with clean water. A cheap external mix airbrush can be used for light to moderate dusting.

7. For more severe cases, wet a toothbrush with canvas cleaner and gently brush a small amount into the sails.

8. For light layers of dust, use compressed air in various forms, such as shop air. Mix a weak mixture of handwashing soap and water and spray the boat and sails with it. Let it sink in for about 15 minutes, then gently brush the sails with a soft artists paint brush.

9. Use Q-tips and time to clean the rest of the ship, with saliva being a favorite cleaning fluid.

  • Wow. One of my past relatives was a physician on a British ship. Another ship approached, they had cholera. He was the only man on his ship who would volunteer to go in the other ship and help. Eventually apparently going back to his own ship the ships bumped at exactly the wrong time and he broke a thigh, when he eventually went to America he became a preacher. I know his name and in about where he landed in America. I’m 68″ retired by forced,,stroke. The rigging is impressive.
