Before purchasing a new snorkel mask or discarding one that leaks, consider these five tactics to prevent water from entering the mask.
1. Take deep breaths and check for leaks on the surface. If the leak is at the top, tighten the connection or replace the o-ring. If the leak is in the bottom, choose a high-quality snorkel mask and maintain it.
2. Check your face dimensions, basic fitting for your face shape, and do the suction test. If your snorkel mask starts leaking, tighten it if necessary. Position the mask on your face with the straps hanging and inhale through your nose to ensure a good seal.
3. Inspect your mask regularly and clean it before using it. Loop the mask strap over the front of the mask and hold it. Seal it off inside the air-box and wait for it to dry out. Use an air hose to restart when the mask is leaking.
4. Pull the snorkel head off and put your hand over the open end to check if it’s sealed. This works with petrol and diesel. Test the system for leaks by buying a can of quick start from your local spares shop and spraying it in slow motions over all areas. Spray starter fluid in the area you suspect may be leaking to evaporate it quicker.
5. Check if the snorkel has a leak by putting the lower part in a bucket full of water. If it fills the air cleaner housing and doesn’t leak out, the snorkel is leak-free.
