In this series on building a wooden Snipe class sailboat, the owner shares how to build a rudder from scratch. The rudder is built off of the original rudder for a 20 Bayliner Buccaneer sailboat, which had cracked and rotted badly. The owner of the sailboat shares the process of layouting the rudder from the class and how to cut the groove. Mike Gudmunsen shares how to build a rudder after the one on his yacht was destroyed after hitting a submerged object.
The spade rudder is the most efficient of all sailboat rudders, as it uses all its area to apply a turning. To build a rudder, you will need a piece of wood or other material cut to the desired size and shape, a set of hinges to attach the rudder to the boat, and a glass to cure one side of the rudder. For a spade rudder, the stock must resist bending, shear, and torsion, and should be thicker and possibly solid.
For a rudder, use epoxy with a filler to make it thick, more like a thick glue than a liquid epoxy. Before putting the rudder in place, make sure to check the condition of the rudder and ensure it is in good working order.
