Canoes are an affordable and versatile way to build a boat. The simplest canoes can be made from just three pieces of plywood: the two sides and the base. More complex shapes can be created using luan plywood, fiberglass, epoxy, and a little mahogany. The Outrigger Canoe With Freestanding Mast is a sailboat built out of luan plywood, fiberglass, epoxy, and a little mahogany.
The canoe should be made of locally available materials, quick to assemble on the launching area, and very cheap. The drop-in outrigger can transform unstable canoes, narrow dinghies, and some kayaks into stable platforms for fishing or diving. The ply sides are joined to the hull bottom with shaped stringers running the length of the hull.
There are five lightweight and beautiful sailing canoe plans to build from plywood, or convert your canoe into an outrigger canoe. The main hull weight is about 160 pounds, with a double layer on the outside bottom and a single layer on the inside bottom up to the waterline. The main canoe hull is built from just two sheets of plywood, stitched and glued together with epoxy and glass tape. All other parts are constructed from luan plywood, fiberglass, epoxy, and a little mahogany.
