Canoe seats in recreational canoes should be placed low enough that the paddlers are stable without having to kneel in the canoe. A canoe like the Tripper, equipped with the Clipper Performance System, is designed so that the canoeist can sit and lock his/her knees under the gunnel. This allows a five point brace. The paddlers’ feet are pushed against the footbrace with the paddler held firmly in place with the contoured plastic seat. This position allows the paddlers to use their “hips and thighs” to help control the canoe. They are able to lean the canoe over until the gunnel is near the water level without having to brace with the paddle. This type of control is nearly impossible in a canoe with the seats placed high for kneeling.
The keel line of the racing canoe will have little or no rocker. If you want a maneuverable two-man canoe, look for one in the 15′ to 17′ range with a rounded bow and stern, slight rocker, and large volume. If speed is your primary consideration, choose a 17′ to 18’6″ canoe with a sharp bow and stern line, little or no rocker, a stiff bottom, and a sliding bow seat.

On an expedition, or if you are only day sailing this is important, as it means that you can keep moving on so that you can get back to the car at the end of the trip or the end of the day.
The canoe can be taken to the water on top of your car. Two people can lift the canoe onto the roof rack and it is even possible for one person alone to develop their own technique for this. A sailing canoe can be kept at home in the garage or in the garden under cover which saves on marina bills. Because it is easy to transport it is much easier to take to a new cruising ground than many other small sailing boats. A car toppable boat is much cheaper to take on ferries, if you are going abroad, than taking a small boat on a trailer.

What size sail for a canoe?
In Canoe Rig, author Todd E. Bradshaw recommends a 15–25 sq. ft. sail for a 10–12′ canoe, a 25–40 sq. ft. sail for a 12–15′ canoe, and a 40–60 sq. ft. sail for a 15–18′ canoe. Unless you’re an experienced sailor, err on the low side of these ranges, as a smaller sail will be more forgiving. It’s also possible to buy sails and spars new, or to make your own (see “Sourcing the Sails and Spars,” below).
- Mounting frame. Cut a cross brace out of 2×4 so that it spans the width of the canoe and sits on top of the gunwales just forward of the stern deck. Clamp the cross brace to the gunwales (see “Clamping System,” p. 80).
- Cut two 2x4s that extend from the cross brace to beyond the stern of the canoe, far enough to accommodate a rudder skeg (see step 4).
- Fasten the aft ends of the frame arms together to form a triangle. We beveled the ends of the frame arms so that they would meet at an angle for a cleaner look, though you could connect them with a plywood or a metal plate. Fasten the other two ends to the top outer edges of the cross brace.
- Cut a 2×4 or plywood rudder skeg that will run from where the frame arms meet to a point lower down on the stern where it will connect to the stem of your canoe and provide rotational resistance. Attach the skeg to the frame arm with two angle brackets.
- Connect the bottom of the skeg to the stem, lower on the stern. We used a bolt with large washers to connect the bottom of the skeg to our canoe’s stern pad-eye. You’ll have to make a notch in the skeg to accommodate the pad-eye. If your canoe doesn’t have a pad-eye, you could install one.
- Rudder stock. Find the waterline by placing the canoe in the water with an average expected load.
- Cut a rudder stock from 2×4 in so that it extends above the frame arms (allowing clearance for the tiller) and down to just above the waterline of the canoe.
- Fasten the stock to the skeg using cabinet hinges, or proper marine pintles and gudgeons if you have them.

Before you lay the money out for a canoe, you’ll want to educate yourself on the available options. This includes the materials canoes are made from. Some materials work in some situations much better than others.
Why are longer canoes faster?
Looking at our short boat vs a long boat assuming they are the same width, if the boats weighsthe same amount and the person paddling doesn’t change, the overall weight doesn’t change meaningitscontribution to kinetic energy doesn’t change, but with a long boat, the speed at which you move the water is less because the same displacement of water happensalong a greater length. If the long boat were twice as long as the short, you would only need about one quarter the energy to displace the water.Longer boats mean that for any given forward speed you paddle the boat,you end up moving the water sideways more slowly. This resultsin asavings in the amount of energy used to move the water.
Note that any energy applied to moving the water around the boat is visible in the form of the wake left by the boat. The boat wake is that energy moving away and lost. The act of your bow cutting through the waves creates a wave that continues after the boat has passed, another wave is created when the water slides back in behind the hull. These waves created by the boat moving through the water combine together to make the wake.
Given this, it would seem obvious that longer boats would always be faster. If you are putting less effort into moving the water out of the way, with a longer boat, that has to be a good thing. But longer boats come at a price. They generally have more wetted surface area. The shape with the lowest surface area is a round or spherical shape, when you start to stretch it out while keeping the volume the same, you end up increasing the surface area.
And remember that more surface area means more frictional drag. Looking at the graph of the velocity curve above, you can see that at the left side where the numbers are low, the orange curve takes a while before it really starts swinging upwards. The result of this slow start to the curve is that at low speeds the form drag doesn’t amount to much until your speed increases. At low speeds most of the drag on your boat is a result of the friction of the water rubbing against the hull.
