The Scout Shop has compiled a list of five helpful tips to craft a winning sailboat for the Raingutter Regatta, a fun Cub Scout activity. The kit includes instructions on how to build a trimaran sailboat that is wind-powered by blowing on the sail. Scouts can work on making their boat more aerodynamic and decorate it. They then race their boats in water-filled rain gutters at a pack meeting.
The Raingutter Regatta involves building and racing miniature boats, with sailboats being raced down a length of water-filled rain gutters powered by the Cub Scout blowing into the sail through a soda straw. DIY options like the Drain Pipe Regatta are a great investment for classrooms or backyards exploring space.
To build a better raingutter track, use drainage pipe instead of rain gutters, which is far more expensive but increases the raceway. Practice testing your sailboat at a pond or pool before the race, focusing on airflow or taking deep breaths to maximize air output. Vinyl gutters are better than traditional 10′ gutters with end caps attached because they won’t bend as easily when filled with water.
To keep the sail above the gutter, attach it so that the bottom is 1 12 inches above the deck and glue it to the mast so it can’t move.
