How to display a collection of small items?

Displaying collections on the wall or mounted shelves is ideal, as long as the background is simple and the pieces are grouped together for maximum impact. Mix and match pieces from different collections, ensuring there is at least one common element that visually ties them together. Lay out your wall exhibit plans on the floor before using tools, or place tape on the wall to create an “invisible frame”. Floating shelves, shadowboxes, and frames are suitable for wall displays, and framing shops can preserve clothing in sun-protected glass to prevent fading or damage.

Miniature collectibles can be displayed on and around bookshelves in various ways, such as using acrylic cases, vintage printer drawers, glass domes, balls, snow globes, tiered displays, dioramas, book nooks, and floating sneaker shelves. How do you show souvenirs?

To create a minimalist display of your travel mementos, use floating shelves, group items by color or theme, and use a mix of items like small figurines, postcards, and photographs to add depth. Display them in shadow boxes or on small easels for a more formal, museum-like feel. If you have a large collection of travel mementos, consider creating a gallery wall with shelves, frames, and other display items to create a visually stunning display. Hang items from kitchen utensils holder or hanging jewelry displays to match your desired aesthetic.

To combine various types of souvenirs on various shelves, mix and match by using shelves, tables, or small parts of your room. For example, you can place bookshelf books on a bookshelf, create decorative arrangements with sand and shells in IKEA glass containers, or create handpainted Christmas tree decorations with each destination. Personalize decoration items like pillowcases, embroidered pillows, or throw blankets to make your house look warm and cozy, but don’t overdo it.

Get a travel keepsake box for each destination and add all of your related items to it. Display them in a corner of your living room or bedroom after labeling or using personalized boxes if possible. Create a shadowbox for each destination, including maps, ticket stubs, postcards, shells, rocks, or small figurines. Arrange them in a grid for a modern and minimalist display or put them randomly throughout the house for a more relaxed feeling.

Make a collage of your boarding passes, luggage tags, entry tickets, and public transportation tickets from a destination and display them on a shelf or hang them on a wall for a huge piece of wall art. Make resin or epoxy art to remember your trips, such as rings made out of coins from various countries. Display all airplane models you have flown on a shelf, either directly from the airlines or generic ones from Amazon. For an extra touch of fun, make 3D puzzles with them.

Lastly, make coasters with photocopied versions of your passport stamps to use as day-to-day coasters or add them as a collection to each destination’s shelf or corner. These items are sure to be a conversation starter for any guest.

How do you display souvenir items?

A gallery wall is a great way to display travel souvenirs and life events. It can be created by framing printed photos, fabrics, postcards, and posters. The choice of frame can be mixed and matched or the same style can be used for a cohesive look. The price of the prints varies, but Mpix is preferred for their quality. Other items like a sake set, geisha doll, and vase from Logan’s grandmother’s emigration from Japan are also valuable family heritage pieces. These items are stored safely in a display cabinet while traveling.

How do you display small items in a store?

To encourage impulse buying, avoid creating “clutter” by displaying a limited number of options. Instead, focus on small items that create focal points within your store. Display stands for these items can help simplify the customer’s purchasing decision and prevent confusion. A cluttered countertop with too many displays can reduce the perceived value of products. Instead, focus on displaying one or two items, such as shelves, racks, endcaps, and wall slat displays, which can help customers make a yes/no decision. This approach will help customers make a more informed decision about their purchase.

How to display mementos on a wall?

To create a visually appealing home decor, follow the rule of threes and incorporate varying heights of pieces. Arrange smaller pieces in a decorative shadow box frame for easy display. In front of a wall, add art or a wall mirror to create space illusion. Sometimes, sentimental items need reimaging to fit with the home’s decor. Restore inherited furniture with a china hutch or cabinet, or update it with new hardware if in good condition. Add LED strip lighting to illuminate special objects.

Including sentimental objects in home decor is a lovely way to remember important people and experiences. Marino advises clients to stage it with intention and be direct with their statement, even if it’s eccentric. Remember to stage it with intention and be happy with the outcome.

  • This is such a sweet, sweet article. The dog parts definitely brought on tears. My precious little dog passed this November and the next day my mom and I spent hours at a Michael’s for me to pick out just the right frames and flowers. I put flowers and framed photos of him all through the house in his special spots and wallet and car and we made his collar into a bracelet (I really recommend that). I displayed certain items in special ways then gradually moved towards thinking about donating some of it. It helped me to leave his leash and bowls in place awhile, and go to a pet loss support group, and to take daily sunrise and sunset walks in honor of him with my Dad for a week, sometimes pretty tearful. Volunteering at an animal rescue helped too.

  • You make me cry! Thank You 🙏. Omg your way of sharing and showing cultures is exactly, exactly what I am attempting to do. With my vignettes ! Your approach is NOT fussy it’s all interactive. Which is what anyone’s life has been. If I was at your home I would not hesitate to pick an item up and ask for it’s story. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful time with us. It’s made me feel like “heck, yah I can accomplish this”. You can’t make mistakes when done with love ❤️ xxxooo

  • Thank you so much for this article!!! We are currently building our house, and once it’s done I’m decorating it myself. However, I’m having a dilemma; although I’m attracted to the idea of being a minimalist, and I don’t like buying let’s say a pretty wooden box for no reason and display it, I do have some nice things I bought while traveling. I watch many interior designers’ articles and many just go to the store, and buy these cheap items and place them throughout the house. I just can’t do that, there’s no purpose to them. Your tips and ideas are making my creative lightbulb turn on. Thanks again!!! 👍👍

  • I have shadow boxes of my previous pets as well, with their leashes and collars, and I display all of my husbands army badges and ribbons. Everyone always points them out when they come over. They are excellent conversation peices and it tells a story of your life. I’m glad to see a designer do the same! Some designers make a space beautiful but not personal.

  • You know this article totally made me cry. Specifically, your fur baby display. I just lost my Brucie last month. I think it’s beautiful how you continue to honor those who have left you physically. It touched my heart. I believe all souls are eternal even animals. Despite this, transition is never easy and grieving takes time too. Thank you for sharing what is deep and meaningful in your heart. ♡♡♡

  • Not going to lie… I rewatch this article every few months because it brings me so much joy. I’m in the middle of a massive renovation and I’m holding out hope for when I can start to ‘reclutter’ my space with all the family’s collections and keepsakes. I really hope you’ll do a similar article like this about displaying collections! Do you think you’ll ever do a article on maximalism? I’d love to see it! Xx

  • I loved your website already, but after perusal this article, and see that you sweetly keep the ashes of your dogs, I discovered you and your family as beautiful persons as well. I do keep the ashes of my two fur babies, Connie and Homer, and love having them with me. Thanks a lot and a huge virtual hug from Argentina.

  • Oh my goodness! You made me cry when you were talking about how you honored your fur babies memories and keep their ashes displayed so that the will always be near and dear to your hearts. I have a cocker spaniel fur baby that will be 10 in a few months and I love him like crazy. Your love and kindness shine so bright in this article! Then to see your special keepsakes from your baby shower and how your friend did the dream catcher! Oh it was one tear after another. I just found your website and I am hooked and have been binge perusal for days.I hope you, your hubby and now your sweet baby girl are doing fabulous!

  • Thank you for referring me to watch this article! It’s so beautiful and sentimental. I am in tears when you talked about your furry babies that have passed away! Really appreciate great tips and contents in this article. It seems like the sentimental items in this article are either belong to one specific theme or can be framed and hang up. Hope you can make another article to talk about what to do with those small travel souvenirs (different themes and shapes) some time in the future! Thank you again! 😃

  • Hi Julie. I am a new subscriber and I absolutely love your website. This article is my favorite so far. I admire how you have laid the foundation to a beautiful family with your loving memories (I can’t even think of your dogs and headpiece without crying). Thank you for your thoughtful articles, insight and balanced approach. P.S. I think you have a soothing voice.

  • This is so much what I’ve always wanted to do!!! I’ve wanted shadow boxes for each of our parents! Thanks so much for your thoughtful, creative and sentimental ideas! By the way, I made pin boards with my mother’s old pins and mine! Beautiful Keepsakes! We also have a Mickey Mouse shaped pin board from Etsy where we display our Disney pins!

  • I’m new to your website and I’m loving it! We have moved into my mothers house after she passed away and it is a major downsize for us. We are empty nesters so we can deal with the smaller space. We are doing an entire renovation, which is why I found you! I’m good a decor and I was confirmed of that by perusal your articles. What I was searching for was a way to display pictures of my children and grandchildren in a classy way. My style is very eclectic. I love what you did with your momentous which is already giving me ideas, but if you have some creative ideas I would love to know them. Thank you, Dianna Lynn

  • I love the way you have displayed everything. My biggest problem is that in my family, daughters inherit furniture. I have 2 items that I have basically kept in my bedroom because my husband did not like them. Now that I am on my own again, I plan to display my antique dresser in between my living room and dinning room. The color really does not go with my overall theme but I am of hopes that it will blend in just enough to not look our of place. I think when I pick my floor color it might be a way to help it stand out just enough, but not so much that it throws the balance of the room off. I will let you know how this works out.

  • Loved this article! Can you help me with ideas on how to display pictures of friends…a friends board/collage of some sort. I want to put on one of my walls so I can stop & look or show guests pictures of friends I’m referring to. It’ll be fairly large. Also any advice on how to renovate an antique curio cabinet & travel trunk I got from my mother. I want to display but they need to be repaired. Thankyou !

  • I just found your website and I ❤️❤️❤️ that you keep your fur baby’s ashes on display along with the Uber creative shadow boxes. It just never felt right to keep my pup’s ashes on the closet shelf but I didn’t know what do do with them. My hubby and I are building a home, our first together and I will have a beauty room/art studio to do whatever I want to with. I am so excited to finally know what to do with my sentimental items since perusal your article! I’m sure you’re loving the new mommy life by now! Blessings to your little one!

  • That’s soo amazing how u were able to beautifully display your wedding sentiments and that they tell ur story. So in our old house, I displayed our engagement photo by the entryway and a wedding photo at one of the side tables in our living room- this time in our new house I really wanted to group them together. Would it be a good idea to display 1 large engagement photo, 1 medium wedding photo, maybe another small ceremony wedding photo on the wall going up the stairway? And then grouping our family photos next to it?

  • Hello, I just found your website and I am binge perusal it. Thank you for your amazing contents. I saw how you framed your wedding invitations and was wondering if you have any tips as to how to incorporate some of the wedding cards that were giving to us.They have some amazing wishes and are so meaningful that I just dont want to throw them out. Any tips would be appreciated.

  • Hi Julie I recently found your youtube website and love all the ideas you have, I have a small ranch style home and the living room is very small with one large window, I have 3 small windows waiting to get put in on one wall to add more light in the room, but with this covid we are waiting for a while longer, on that wall I only have a large mirror and it needs something else since perusal you I just changed the furniture around in that room, what do you suggest for a large wall with just the mirror, the small love seat was there so that is why I moved things around. there are also 2 matching chairs on that wall so any suggestions that you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

  • Julie,🦩💖 Weird Question: How weird will it look if we paint 3/4 of the way up a 30 ft vaulted wall in our living room? Is there any way I can make it look purposeful? We rent, have permission to paint, landlord has not painted when promised, just want the new walls. Don’t want to to go up that high to paint or hire anyone. Ideas?

  • I would love some tips on displaying blown up photographs on a wall that’s already “busy”. I have 2 walls in my room covered with wallpaper with a green and yellow pattern. On one of these walls I’d love to hang a large photo from my trip to Uluru. Any tips on making it look put together rather than messy/unplanned?

  • Thank you for sharing so many wonderful ideas. Quick question my husband and I used to buy a plate as souvenir from every anniversary or special trip we made. I have them in a box but I always want to display them in my dinner room. My room is too small to put a china cabinet or any piece of furniture. Could I display them on the wall? We currently have a mirror to make the room a bit larger but I am willing to compromise.

  • Wherever did you find those sweet boxes with the heart locked – my sweet Angel (a little ShihTzu) who passed on at 16-1/2 last year was most near and dear and still is – I’ve done a little display with her photos and candle however still looking for something special to keep her ashes in and that box looks perfect

  • This was such a great article, Julie! I feel like you poured out your heart to us and I teared up when you talked about your fur babies. Anyways, my husband and I have been collecting rocks from our various travels (such as from gift stores at national parks). How would you display these in a classy way? I’m thinking some sort of glass display case with plaques that label the kind of rock and where it came from. Do you have any ideas?

  • Help!!! I traveled around the world as a young child. Living in the Philippines…Thailand…England…Canada..the last goes on but in between living at these places we also were able to travel to France..Egypt..Italy…China.. . Japan..Jerusalem..Germany..and that list goes on. The My mothers collection were plates and spoons. I have inherited them and cherish them all. I never know how to display them. I usually have them in the Breakfast room hanging in no particular order. Not framed just nailed. I haven’t displayed the spoons. Don’t even know how to begin with those. Please help.

  • I have one of my grandmother’s kimonos I would like to display but cant find a creative stylish way to do so….previously I just hung a different kimono from a bamboo rod from the vaulted ceiling. I thought of maybe displaying the kimono within an oversized shadow box or similiar but dont feel as if that would display the piece effectively since the only design is along the bottom left side continuing onto the back bottom.also, I dont have anything else to display within the shadow box frame other than the paper wrapping traditional kimonos come in.plz help!!

  • Hello Julie, I stumbled upon your website because I was searching for how to display items that I have that are from different cultures. I recently moved from a very traditional home into a home where I’m going for the more simple, neutral mid-century modern look (just wanted a change after 25 years of dark woods and ornate trims). Over the years, I have collected paintings, watercolor prints, family portraits, embroideries, vases, knick knacks – all of which have sentimental value. (I usually do not purchase items “just to decorate”.) However, it is just an eclectic collection of many colors that seems to fit in the traditional home but not so much in the more contemporary styled home. Many of my items are either from our hispanic or asian roots in addition to our travels to other world cultures. How can I display these items and still maintain the feel of more simple lines and more contemporary style that I’m going for? And, by the way….I love your website! Your topics are so appropriate to those of us who do not have the talent for interior design. You break things down and explain it in such a way that it makes me feel confident that I can do it! Thank you.
