Cruise ships can stay above the water as long as they can displace an equal amount of water. However, this stability comes at a cost: speed. Boats move through the water much faster than cruise ships, so there is about 30 more feet of a cruise ship sitting underwater. Such a massive vessel needs this difference or displacement to float.

How does a cruise ship stay on top of water?
The reason that large cruise ships carrying hundreds of thousands of tonnes can float on water is largely down to physics. Put simply, cruise ships float because their mass is low in relation to the volume of water they’re sailing on. This creates an effect called buoyancy, which keeps the ship upright and afloat.

To keep afloat, the cruise ship must be able to displace its weight in water before being submerged. That’s a lot easier to do if the cruise ship is constructed in a way so that it’s less dense than the water below it. So how do cruise ship engineers achieve buoyancy during construction? The solution is simple – they choose lightweight, sturdy materials and disperse the weight of the ship across the hull, which we’ll explain in more detail later.

Archimedes’ Principle states that any object totally or partially immersed in a fluid or liquid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. It’s not a stupid question, however, the more you think about it, the more obvious that the answer is yes, they are comparable in size. The “visible space” is obviously similar, or you would have people complaining that they feel cramped by the lack of head space, and tall people would be bumping their heads. The invisible space is where the differences could be, and as posted, ships have infrastructure needs between decks just like big buildings do, probably even more.

Cruise ships are organized much like floating hotels, with a complete hospitality staff in addition to the usual ship’s crew. They cater to nautical tourists, with recent vessels being described as “balcony-laden floating condominiums”. The “megaships” went from a single deck with verandas to all decks with verandas, and feature ameneties such as theaters, fine-dining and chain restaurants, spas, fitness centers, casinos, sports facilities, and even amusement park attractions.
Cruise ships require electricity both for propulsion and onboard power. As with cargo ships, cruise vessels are designed with all the heavy machinery at the bottom of the hull and lightweight materials where feasible at the top, making them inherently stable even as passenger ships are getting ever taller, and most supplement design with stabilizer fins to further reduce rolling in heavy weather. While some cruise ships use traditional fixed propellers and rudders to steer, most larger ships use azimuth thrusters that can swivel left and right to steer, vastly improving vessel maneuverability.
