Snorkeling equipment is available for all-day access at Gils Fins and Boats or in advance. The sting ray excursion includes snorkel gear for 39 adults and 19 children. Guests can bring their own gear, including a yellow mask and snorkel, and rent fins for 50% of the price.

Snorkeling gear is mandatory for all-day rentals, but they are available free of charge at lifeguard towers. There are three main options for snorkeling: bringing your own gear, wearing the fluorescent life vest provided by the resort, or using the glass bottom boat scenic voyage.

Is it sanitary to rent snorkel gear?

Renting beach gear from the experts. The process for cleaning and sanitizing snorkels and masks is a standard that Boss Frog’s Hawaii employees take seriously. At all ten locations on Maui, three locations on Kauai and one in Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, rental gear is received and processed in the same way. Once returned, masks and snorkels are separated from fins and bags. The mask and snorkels are placed in a large sink, where they are soaked in a mixture of dish soap and hospital grade sanitizer for one hour. They are then individually scrubbed by hand, rinsed and hung to dry before returning to the rack for rental. This ensures that all of the gear going out is safe and germ free. It also aids in reducing mask fog while snorkeling.

Reducing mask fog to increase visibility. There is nothing worse than a foggy mask while snorkeling. To reduce the risk of missing once in a lifetime marine life sightings or spending most of your time at the surface adjusting your mask, anti-fog solution is highly recommended. To use:

• Squirt or spray a small amount of solution into both sides of the mask (on the inside)
• Move the mask from side to side to spread the liquid

My family loves to snorkel, and I know this will be a memorable activity for you too! There are many kinds of tropical fish and marine life in this 22-acre lagoon located at the Family Beach. There is a snorkeling trail for beginners but be sure to keep your little ones close as there is a current when you float around seeking hidden treasures under the sea.

Once you’ve flipped your fins to your heart’s content, enjoy a perfect beach day relaxing along the lagoon or in a nearby hammock. I always make time to walk (or tram ride) the island’s length to stop in both shops for exclusive merchandise and special photo opportunities. Did you know that if you purchase the drink of the day cup onboard, you can bring it with you to the island? The bartenders will honor the special, so you can receive a few extra ounces of their topical Konk Kooler at the price of a regular size.

Nothing is more exciting than going on a Disney Cruise. The best thing about a Disney Cruise in my opinion is Castaway Cay – Disney’s Private Island! Most Disney cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean include one and sometimes two stops to this amazing destination. This location has many activities to be enjoyed for the young to the young at heart. My must-do during the day at Castaway Cay is to snorkel in the crystal-clear waters.

Castaway Cay has a 22-acre snorkeling lagoon just off the family beach area. The snorkeling path is filled with all kinds of sunken treasures including a shipwreck and even some hidden Mickeys. The treasures are marked with buoys so that you know which direction to go while in the water. Plenty of different fish will also be swimming all around you. A net does surround the area to prevent large marine life from coming in but keep in mind you are in the open ocean so on occasion, you may encounter a few surprises.

On my last trip, I found Dory! As I was following her around, I encountered one of those surprises. A barracuda came swimming right past me, but it had no interest in me or even any of the little fish around me. Other snorkelers have also reported seeing a small nurse shark in the lagoon area. A good tip to keep in mind while swimming in the ocean is to avoid wearing anything shiny, like jewelry. Fish are attracted to shiny things so not wearing them in the water might lessen your chances of any surprises. Remember, you’re bigger than they are so they’re more scared of you than you are of them.

Is there sea lice at Castaway Cay?

As a Castaway Cay veteran, I’ve been there several times and have never encountered sea fleas or sea lice. Of course, it is an island, and the water where guests swim is part of the ocean. Therefore, I’m not surprised if other guests have “encountered” sea creatures such as the microscopic larvae of jellyfish (sometimes referred to as “sea lice.”) Of course, as with islands in the Caribbean, the wind and the surf can change things dramatically in a short amount of time. Therefore, what some may experience on one day could be totally washed away with the tide for the next group of guests.

You can probably purchase a prevention or treatment online if you do a little research. In addition, you may want to consult with your doctor for advice. Yet, don’t worry about it too much. As with any outdoor endeavor, you’re going to experience some unpleasant elements, and as moms, we just have to do our best to keep our family safe and happy. When we’re at the beach, I encourage my kids to take freshwater showers often especially after being in the salt water. It always helps to wash off irritants like the salt, sand and other things we can’t see.

Cons of Buying Snorkel Gear. Cost – The best snorkeling equipment can be pretty costly. Of course, the gear will pay for itself eventually the more you use it. But if you rarely go snorkeling, buying a complete setup isn’t the most cost-effective option.

Weight and Luggage Space – One of the main drawbacks of having your own snorkeling equipment is carrying it around and fitting it in your luggage. If you have to travel light, you don’t necessarily want to lug around a heavy and bulky set of snorkeling gear.

Are water shoes needed at Castaway Cay?

There are a few things you’ll want to bring to Castaway Cay that you might not otherwise consider. First, quality water shoes. You’ll want these because the paved walkways and even that white sand can get hot, plus there are crushed up seashells and other things that can cut your feet in it. Second, beach bug repellant.

Castaway Cay is mostly an unimproved island, and depending upon the time of year you visit, the sandflies (or “no-see-ums”) can be really bad. On our first visit in early February, these bugs made Serenity Bay virtually intolerable. Bugs aren’t always an issue, but it’s better to be safe than sorry…and not get eaten alive.

You’ll want to take an underwater camera. There is a lot to see and photograph underwater (including Hidden Mickeys!), so we think it’s a good idea to pack an underwater camera. Nowadays you can pick up a decent digital underwater camera for less than $100, making it really foolish to waste money on a disposable one on Castaway Cay.

How long can you stay underwater with snorkel gear?

Castaway Cay is one of my favorite ports of call when sailing on one of the beautiful Disney Cruise Line ships. Beautiful beaches, clear blue water, variety of activities for all it has it all! You will use your Key to the World card for any purchases made on the island as cash is not accepted at Castaway Cay. Be certain you don’t go back to the ship without stopping by one of the two gift shops on the island where you can find exclusive Castaway Cay merchandise!

If you are interested in doing any activities while at Castaway Cay, those can be pre-reserved through Port Adventures prior to your sailing or you can check availability for activities such as bicycle rentals and float rentals once there. Your Daily Navigator or Navigator app will also list all activities and entertainment on the island as well as lunch serving times. The delicious barbecue lunch at Cookies BBQ is not to be missed and be sure you finish it up with a huge chocolate chip cookie! Or on second thought – 2 chocolate chip cookies sandwiched around ice cream!!
