Who is the billionaire in Winnetka?

Justin Ishbia, the billionaire who’s building a $77.6 million estate on the Winnetka lakefront, is offering the community $3 million to fund upgrades to the beach next door to his property.

“There are no strings attached,” Ishbia told Crain’s Thursday ahead of an evening meeting where an associate announced the offer on his behalf. All the thorny issues about the land swap Ishbia and the Winnetka Park District agreed to in late 2020 and his ownership of a $6.2 million property between two parks have “no correlation with this” proposed donation.

Ishbia, who has said he plans to move his family from Lincoln Park to the Winnetka estate when it’s ready, said the offer is strictly motivated by his desire to help “Winnetka get the beach improvements it’s been trying to do.” He said park district officials indicated to him that with a first phase of improvements at Elder Lane and Centennial parks costing more than $10 million, “they don’t have enough for phase two.”
