On average, diesel prices for yachts range from 3.2 to 3.9 per gallon, while petrol prices typically fall between 7.2 and 7.8 per gallon. These prices can fluctuate based on factors such as market conditions, regional taxes, and fuel availability. The exact price you are looking to pay per gallon depends on the marina you find yourself in.
A yacht might use between 20 to 100 gallons of fuel per hour. Smaller yachts, such as those around 40 feet, tend to be on the lower end of the scale, consuming about 400-500 lhour. Fuel is one of many annual running costs of a yacht, not only for cruising but also for the generators that keep the vessel running while at anchor.
To calculate yacht fuel cost, first, determine how far you will be traveling. The fuel consumption rate refers to the amount of fuel consumed by the yacht’s engine per hour, which is influenced by various factors, including the vessel size. Average yacht fuel capacity can vary anywhere from 10,000 to 50,000 gallons of fuel, allowing them to undertake extended journeys across vast distances with ease. The efficiency of boat fuel is measured in pounds of fuel used in an hour per horsepower.
For smaller pleasure yachts, fuel tank capacities ranging from 200 to 1,000 gallons are expected. For example, the longest Superyacht in the world, 180m MY Azzam, holds 1,000,000 litres of fuel. The average price for a gallon (3.9 liters) of fuel for yachts is around 3.2-3.7 in the U.S., but it also depends on where they dock. Marine fuel is typically sold by the liter or gallon, and the prices vary depending on the time of year and other factors.

Are yachts expensive to run?
Let’s walk through a sample yacht and the yearly running costs with full transparency of a 10-million-dollar yacht. Your major costs will be yacht crew, dockage, fuel, and maintenance. Please understand everything is variable based on those decisions plus the age of your yacht.
Owners can expect to spend about 10-15% of the purchase price annually on operating and maintaining a yacht. That’s $1-1.5 million a year for a $10 million yacht. The bigger the boat, the more crew and salaries you need. There are also other crew costs, like medical and liability insurance, training, and uniforms.
When you are not exploring the world or sunning on the deck in St. Barts, the yacht needs a place to dock. Dockage costs vary depending on how big the boat is and how desirable the marina is. You can lease a dock monthly or purchase a dock.
Like most things, yachts get wear and tear — they require regular maintenance and repairs. Routine maintenance can cost roughly 2% of the boat value after the yacht’s first year, and around 7.5% of the boat’s value when the yacht is 10 years old. That is not including surveys and refits.

Paying $10 a gallon at the fuel dock this season? We are going to talk about 3 topics on how to stretch your dollar this boating …
Great conversation and on my mind constantly as I plan the migration south to Florida from NY this summer. We will mostly cruise at my sweet spot of about 7-8 knots – “looper speed”. Having the option to open her up as needed is comforting, but saving fuel is the plan. 7gph vs 40gph is a huge difference!
Proper seamanship is knowing the forces of nature that surrounds one. The lands topology, tides, currents of which there are differing types. The waters depths are all just part of what constitutes proper planning. I was going to sing eloquent of the joys of Autopilot…however, I just noticed you caught yourself…lol…good on you. Technology is wonderful but, calculators have made people lazy and incapable of basic mental mathematics. My captain and I play with a sextant and plastic coated sea charts for fun, but if the systems were to ever fail. We are both capable of knowing exactly where we are at any given time. Perhaps you should do a 30-60 minute article on proper trip planning?
Marine diesel is 7 bucks per gallon at Janzen beach in Portland as of a week ago. They will give a large purchase discount of 20 cents I think. That’s about the cheapest in portland. I actually used my 30-gallon fuel caddy and bought diesel at the truck pump to save money. I typically run 1 engine at about 1200 rps…burns between 1-2 gallons depending on current, wind, and how clean my boat is. Now, I clean before I leave every time, and I pay way more attention to tides, currents, and wind. Even with all the extra vigilance, it’s still not enough. At the current prices, my fuel bill will be over 4k at the marine pump. I have been tracking prices down the west coat. Marine diesel is worse in California, and a little better in Mexico. Heck, it was mid 4s even in Ensenada and a little worse in Turtle bay. I was heading to Cabo this year but not anymore. The fuel bill alone would be over 10k. This is not changing for at least 4 years. Heck, this may never change again. I am putting my boat on the market this week. After it sells, I will go back to a sailboat. That’s sad because I love my boat…I just can’t cruise like I want to anymore on it. (:
Diesel prices are a true scam. I drove a semi nation wide and paying for Diesel. Diesel in refining requires less refining than gas. I now am retired living in Central Washington. Diesel for the road is 5.85 a gallon gas is just under than 4.00. Washington has the one of the highest fuel tax in the US.
