How Much For A Cruise Ship Trip?

The chart below presents the costs of taking a cruise, categorized into three categories: shorter cruises (five days) and traditional seven-day trips. The average cost for a seven-night Caribbean cruise in November ranges from approximately 270 to 2,600 per person, while a seven-night Alaska cruise in May ranges from approximately 50-450 per person per day for a basic cabin. Most cruise lines charge between 400 and 4,000 for a 7-night Caribbean trip in a balcony stateroom. The true cost of a cruise, not including travel to and from the cruise, is about 1.7x to 2.2x.

The price of a Royal Caribbean cruise varies based on factors such as ship, sail date, length of the cruise, and the number of guests. Averages across major cruise lines for balcony cabins fall between 100 and 150 per night most of the year. Suites and rooms on upscale or upscale cruise ships also have additional costs, such as tips, specialty dining, shore excursions, and spa services.

The true cost of a cruise, not including travel to and from the cruise, according to the 2021 cruise industry survey, is about 1.7x to 2.2x. Royal Caribbean’s seven-night Caribbean cruise starts at around 600 per person, although this price can vary depending on the time. Budget lines can offer cruise tickets as low as 50 per night, while more high-end experiences can reach up to 1,000 per night and more.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.

  • I was on the Princess Ruby from January 15 to February 12 for a total of 28 days. I originally did a back to back, but when I was on board, they offered a single solo offer of 50% off. So I added two more weeks to my cruise. I paid less for a balcony and I did for the original interiors and I had a great time.

  • You always compliment the amount of storage Princess cabins have but you are a travel minimalist and never have stuff to fill all the empty cabinets, closets and shelves. LOL. Kudos on being a minimalist! I don’t have that level of restraint, but I wish I did. I have that famous decluttering book by Marie Kondo collecting dust in a pile of other unread books. Must be nice to have all that empty space and no junk cluttering it all up. 🙂

  • Thanks for sharing! Regarding the coffee package – I was just on the Regal Princess Feb 5-12th. I attempted to purchase that coffee package on the app a few days before the cruise but because it was too close- I was unable to. My first day on the cruise I went to the specialty coffe location and asked if I could purchase it there. For $36.00 I purchased “unlimited” specialty coffees which also covered my roommate at no additional cost. Hope this helps for future cruises😊

  • Great article, my sister and I very recently completed a 14 day Princess Cruise across the ditch to New Zealand from Melbourne. We are both Platinum, last cruise we did we received so many bonuses, cabin credit, free bottle of wine, invitation to Captain’s cocktail party, 50% of internet (which we did not take), and free dining in a charge restaurant, pen and paper in the room, towels made into amazing animals. This cruise we got 50% off internet (which we did use this time) and an invite to the Captains cocktail party (which we did not go to because we knew there was Covid on board so we weren’t mixing where people were not using masks (we are aged 73 and 75). There were no other benefits offered. Great cruise, beautiful food, terrific crew, but I guess the cruise line has to cut benefits to make up for the long period of no cruises. Best wishes Beth

  • Excellent article ! loved the way you presented all the facts about your 21 days on the Sky Princess. My wife and I are Elite level cruisers with Princess. We’ve sailed all over the World with Princess. Getting ready to sail again on the Sky Princess on March 4th from FLL. Just a short getaway of 7 days for us. We live 55 minutes north of the port in Palm Beach county. Happy Cruising, Sir !!

  • Great info! Was planning on taking an around the world cruise when I retire but looks like I may be able to stretch it out for a longer stay than 90 days for not much more money to do it the way you’re doing it. Feel like I’m going to learn so much from you during your cruise series! Thanks for sharing Kevin!

  • If you want cheap cruises for next winter, i advise you to look at MSC for the red sea from Egypt and Costa or MSC for the Emirates from Dubai. I did 4 weeks of cruises this winter on the Costa Toscana for the amount of 1700$ with taxes and gratuities included, and in April I will do 2 repositioning cruises from Santos Brazil until Copenhagen Danmark for a total of 35 days on the Costa Firenze, it will also cost me around 1700$ for the 35 days.

  • Wow Kevin…you are going with stylist clothes…nice shoes and sport jacket…love them. You are the best money manger to get the right dollars per day!!!! Love your articles and all the info. Packing so cool and you are the most minimalist and organized person. Love the long electronic cords, and unbound merino clothes. Take care…look forward to following you. Love your website.

  • Great info. You should have a series of vids on how you decide which cruise line is best and how to maximize status, like branded credit cards, stock, etc. everything was great except friends don’t let friends drink foo foo coffee drinks. Good tips . Make me consider trying a cruise . Been on a few liners to visit, but only traveled once on a freighter( another topic)

  • Hi Master Chief. I just found and subscribed to your website. Have you mentioned the meaning of “30 And A Wake Up” in past articles? I did a quick search of your earliest articles and could not find anything. As a fellow Navy retiree, I thought others might be interested. During Vietnam, most of us were assigned for a specific time period, usually one year or exactly 365 days. Almost from the day we arrived, we started to count our remaining time in country by the days remaining plus “a wake up” which was the day we were scheduled to fly home. So if you asked anyone (short timers particularly) how much longer they had left, they would always answer so many days plus a wake up. It has often been said that we were not in Vietnam for 20 years but one year twenty times. I am enjoying your articles.

  • I just booked a cruise on a virgin cruise from Miami to Barcelona in April for 15 nights for $2200 out the door for a single, solo traveler in an inside cabin. With Virgin, that includes Wi-Fi, gratuities, and a $600 bar credit. Then, 2 days in Barcelona and onto a 7 night Mediterranean cruise on MSC that costs $569 not including gratuities. I think there is a $50 room credit?

  • Great ℹ️… I wonder if you can bring your own creamer on board. Or I wonder if they have any sort of hazelnut creamer on board any of the ships 🛳️? I haven’t been on a cruise in years. I’ve also had a cruise fund since I divorced. lol with raising children and such the cruise fund jar has been lacking lol. I’ve always contemplated a tiny home…although, living on a cruise ship the rest of my life sounds great. The logistics seem easy to navigate. Do they have sweet tea? Haha 😂 I don’t understand non sweet tea drinkers! I’m from the south soooo…. If they had sweet tea then I wouldn’t even need a drinks package. Inside cabins look amazing. Thanks for such a great and informative article. I’m glad I found you on YouTube!

  • That inside cabin is nice I could do that I only took one cruise on Carnival ship that inside cabin was horrible and bed was not comfortable great way to spend a year traveling while seeing new places with room, food and transportation covered that total cost isn’t bad cruises are definitely more cost effective if you get the basic cabin and drink the free beverages.

  • I love your articles you are exactly on point with princess having the best utilization of space in their inside cabins. When I first walked into my cabin I was like holy crap. It’s a room not a freaking closet. Then I got pissed off wondering why carnival won’t duplicate the princess cabin on thier ships. I now wonder if Holland cabins are as great.

  • Haven’t cruised in many years but just watched another YT’er show cost and almost fainted! So glad you showed another option. Are the shows free? Saw your mini frig in your room..are you allowed to bring drinks/liquor onboard or are required to buy in the onboard shops? Might bring my Nespresso, lol!

  • i have some questions for your next article (sorry if i missed them and you discussed already) 1) hows the internet? As a digitial nomad i need somewhat decent interent at least some of the time. 2) If you buy two cruises on the same ship, can you just stay in your room/on the boat when one cruise is ending and the others beginning? 3) have you been gaining weight? me and buffets dont go well together, self control goes out of the window usually lol.

  • That’s very good value 😮 I just booked a 24 night cruise to Canada and New England and USA and it’s £4500 pound I haven’t booked a drinks package or Wi-Fi yet what do you think is the best package for me I’m not a drinker 😂 but would want the Wi-Fi to keep in touch with my family back home Thanks I enjoy your vlogs 😊

  • The fact that you get completely screwed unless you cruise so much that you get to the high tiers makes me actively not want to go on cruises. I’d rather spend my limited vacation time not subsidizing other passengers. Of course when I’m retired I might go cruising a lot and then it would make more sense.

  • sorry if you’ve covered this info, but curious if you’re using a travel agent while you traverse the globe, or doing it on your own? ever since finding out you can pretty much see the whole world by cruise, and how inexpensive it can be (if you’re diligent) i’ve been wondering exactly how to make that happen – and then i found your website!

  • There are some people that do this. I still have a home and 3500 nights on a cruise ship. Right now I’m currently on a 3 1/2 year nonstop back to back same port same days switching ships every two or three months and I will tell you it is not cheap. of course you can go on some flimsy carnival cruise ship but for example I’m on the world cruise next when I get off enchanted princess on Friday on Sunday, the royal Caribbean longest world Cruise ever 274 nights and that was approximately $300,000 I will tell you the amount of comfort and pleasure goes directly in hand with the amount of money you pay. this is my last princess after 48. I just can’t stand it anymore after corona because of the passenger behavior is nothing shy of not acceptable.
