Electro-Technical Officers (ETOs) are crucial in ensuring the smooth operation of a superyacht’s electrical and electronic systems. Many larger yachts have a full-time ETO, and there is an official maritime certificate of competency as ETO, recognized by the International Maritime Organisation. ETOs are typically employed on larger yachts where the engineering team consists of 3 or more people and work closely with the Chief Engineer.
There is still a taboo about the ETO and AVIT role in the industry, but with usually a maximum of one ETO on board some large yachts, there is not the same career progression on board. ETOs and electricians are generally employed on larger superyachts where the engineering department comprises around four or five crew. In some instances, one person may be employed to compliment the technical department.
Yachts over 100m 330ft in length generally have both a dedicated ETO and a dedicated AVIT Officer due to the scale of technology and systems on board. A minimum of a Y4 or Y3 engineering certification is typically required, along with a minimum of a Y4 or Y3 engineering certification. The average salary for an ETO on a superyacht is typically 6900 Euro, with a difference of 1500 Euro.
ETOs and AVIT officers are responsible for daily maintenance of all electronic, computer, audiovisual, and communications equipment. Nearly every vessel has had the luxury of having a second ETO, as much more work can be achieved with two.
