In the early one it was the officers “first time seeing the case”. In this one, when he’s more seasoned and uses the joke again, the officer “saw it once before when he was a rookie”. One thing I’ve found really unique about Dave Chapelle is how someone who tackles issues as controversial as he does can still be so likeable and relatable. He doesn’t come across as arrogant as Ricky Gervais, as unhinged as Bill Burr, or as loopy as Chris Rock. Dave is like a buddy you can trust, and he’s never too big for his boots.
Chappelle at his peak, I miss this time in my life so much sometimes. perusal this special brings back so many memories, it reminds me of all the family members I’ve lost in the interim, and how things can never be the same again. Never thought his special would make me emotional in 100 different ways, but it represents such a special place and time in my life, and I’m sure it’s the same for many other people.
This is literally the best stand-up routine I’ve ever seen. The attention to comedic detail, even in the side comments he made, all tied everything together, along with ridiculous subliminals. As Chris Rock said about him, it was as though he was simply having a conversation with the crowd, so you never saw any of his jokes coming. This was literally a masterclass in stand-up comedy.

Portrait of an artist as a young man – Dave is an artist who has grown and developed since this was filmed. For me it’s like my favorite musicians going through their back catalogue and having favorite albums from their early period but also loving their whole body of work. Dave makes me laugh, but he also makes me think – that’s why he is great. Very few comedians do that. Dave is one of them.
Sometimes I feel blessed that I understand three languages, I got to experience some legendary stand-ups with all three languages with their cultures backgrounds, and from experience, there is always that one artist that stands far above the others, and with English, the last one I learned I started to watch various stand-ups from various comedian and Chapelle definitely was one of a kind incomparable with anyone in his domain easily in my top 3, a true genius, that stood the test of time and still delivering to this day.
