How Are Mega Yachts Built?

The latest generation of the world’s largest yachts are being built with environmental considerations in mind. The build process is split into three separate elements: the hull, deck, and interior. In October 2021, German shipyard Abeking Rasmussen announced it had signed a contract to build a 120m superyacht, the Abeking 6514.

Superyachts are all about combining high performance and ultra-luxury, which is no easy task considering the harsh and demanding nature of the task. From privately owned mega yachts to those available for charter, and even vessels still under construction, there are 10 of the biggest superyachts in the world. Azzam, Dutch builders Feadship, Oceanco, and German builders Lürssen and Nobiskrug are the leading builders of very large yachts.

On average, it takes three to four years to build a mega yacht. The build process is split into three separate elements: the hull, the deck, and the interior. All three parts are worked on simultaneously so that they are completed at the same time.

Mega yachts are launched by various means, such as being lifted into the water with a large crane or pair of cranes working in tandem. While yachts of 24 meters and below may be constructed of fiberglass, larger yachts are built for the pleasure of their owners.
