Over the past century, several dozen cruise ships have sunk due to various reasons such as collisions, fires, and natural disasters. The most famous sinking in history was the Titanic, which sank after colliding with an iceberg. Since 1912, only 24 cruise ships have sunk, including ocean liners, river cruises, and cruise ferries.
Total sinkings are rare, but close calls have occurred over the years. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina drove the Norwegian Dawn towards the coast of Florida with winds over 150 mph, causing massive waves to breach doors and flood sections before the crew regained control. In September 2017, the Royal Caribbean Anthem of the Seas was hit by Hurricane. Over the past 100 years, there have only ever been 24 full-size cruise ships that have sunk.
For a cruise ship to sink, it needs to be capsized in a bad storm, which would take very large waves. With radar and advanced technology, cruise ships are built to withstand intense weather conditions. Carnival Splendor and Carnival Triumph suffered similar fates in November 2011 and 2019, respectively.
Today’s cruise ships are built to withstand intense weather conditions and actively monitor the weather to avoid storms if necessary. The last cruise ship to sink was the Orient Queen in 1914.
