Does Turo Get Covered By Travel Insurance?

Turo hosts can choose the protection plan that’s right for them, and every host plan comes standard with up to $750,000 in third-party liability insurance from Travelers. It is important to consider the types of coverage offered by rental car agencies, as some may not cover Turo or overlap with personal insurance in most areas. Turo is not a car insurance company, but they do offer protection plans through Travelers for an additional fee.

All host protection plans in the United States come standard with up to $750,000 in third-party liability insurance issued to Turo under a Travelers policy. Protection plans made available on Turo to guests include liability insurance and a contract that sets forth your level of responsibility for Physical Damage. Insurance coverage on Turo works differently from typical rental car insurance, as Turo is a peer-to-peer company. Both hosts and guests renting are covered by Turo’s insurance.

The cost of a protection plan depends on the plan you choose, with more expensive plans being less. In many cases, your existing car insurance policy will cover rental vehicles at least to some extent. Liability insurance is provided under a policy issued to Turo by Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company, with terms, conditions, and exclusions applying.

When a trip is booked in the state of Washington, Physical Damage to the host’s vehicle is covered by insurance purchased by Turo, but Turo’s insurance does not. All Turo trips include coverage under a third-party liability insurance policy issued to Turo, from Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company (“Travelers”). An optional coverage can pay for a rental car, other forms of transportation, or other transportation expenses if your car is damaged in a covered accident.

  • Thanks for this article. One thing I’m still trying to wrap my mind around: I don’t understand how/why Turo can charge both hosts AND renters for protection plans. Let’s say a host pays for a protection plan, but the renter has no protection plan or insurance. And then the renter gets into an accident. Wouldn’t the host’s plan go into effect? Why would the renter have a separate liability if the host has already bought a protection plan? It doesn’t add up to me. Can you please help me understand? Thanks so much!

  • Had an. Insurance guy explain and still didn’t answer how to insure your car in the first place (geico State Farm progressive ) when your car is not in service. Your insurer will try to find any reason to deny coverage. So your personal car with personal insurance gets NO COVERAGE if you cause a small accident on date night and then file a claim. They will say oh you’re not covered because you violated our terms of service.

  • You cannot be more wrong…turo protection plans are all secondary insurances, so they will go ahead and exhaust your personal insurance first and then pay up. So even the premier plan has the potential to mess up your insurance premiums for ever. However, if you have no insurance, thats yet another story, you will simply get lucky

  • I’m a turo host. An idiot just rented my car and completed destroyed. He said the gas light on the dashboard was on with it wasnt but I didt submit a picture. and he drove 1000 km with the car. what happened? screwed the whole car motor. Now turo doesnt wanna pay the 2k repair damage and the guest either. I strongly recommend everyone to do trust in this compnay

  • Lol. When you wreck a hosts car, they do everything to try and use your primary insurance 1st. It’s only worth buying if you don’t have your own insurance policy. It’s actually a scam and I’m not sure how it’s even legal. So I have to pay for it with my own insurance, THEN I have to pay $3K or $500 because I clicked a button on an app. There’s a reason that you can’t even select the premium option anymore.

  • Please answer this question. I need your help. Scenario: I had a guest who parked my car and another driver collided with it and took off; Guest filed police report and everything accordingly; Guest purchased standard plan. I have a 90/10. Chose to go route to resolve with guest. But I don’t understand the protection plan really for the guest. Does it mean that they’ve purchased a insurance plan where they only pay 500 deductible, and Turo will cover the rest of the damage? I can already tell you it may cost around 2-3k to fix based on past experience. Or does it mean I can only recover 500 from the guest, and I will have to cover the rest out of pocket?

  • I would like to ask you a question, I have a case that the car’s windshield had a crack, based on that the owner filed a damage claim, and showed photos of before and after but that pre-existing nic in the windshield already existed before the photos that the owner did not report, and then he shows the same photos of them with a bigger crack when the only one that I saw before delivering the car was the same ones that already existed before taking the car, which was smaller and that It was not my fault but it was during my rental with the standard insurance company, for which I made a claim to Turo that was not my fault, I hope you can give me an opinion of yourself, thank you
