Does Transferring To Istanbul Require A Visa?

Passengers from ten countries listed in the new regulations must apply for a transit visa before traveling through Turkey. If you are from one of these countries, you do not need a different visa to transit through Istanbul Airport. Transit visas are issued to transit passengers and entitle them to stay in the transit lounge.

There are two visa options for transiting through Istanbul airports: Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the Asian side of Turkey or Istanbul Ataturk Airport on the European side of Turkey. If you never step out of the transit lounge at the airport, you do not need a transit visa for Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. However, if you are a citizen of a country that has a travel document valid for at least 6 months from the date you intend to enter Turkey, you may need to apply for a Turkish transit visa.

If you will not leave the transit lounge at the airport, you are not required to have a transit visa. Otherwise, you will need a visa if you want to transit to your destination through Turkey or stay in Turkey overnight, or you have to pass through immigration. You may need a Turkish Transit Visa to transit through the Istanbul Ataturk Airport on the European side of Turkey or the Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the Asian side.

An electronic airport transit visa requirement has been introduced for citizens of 10 countries who will transit to Turkey starting 15 April 2024. If you are a citizen of a country eligible for a visa-free travel to Turkey, you may not need a transit visa for a 5-hour layover.
