The snorkel mask is an accessory item in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, introduced in the 1.3.0 Free Summer Update (Wave). It can be obtained during the summer from Mabel before building Able Sisters or from the shop once it has opened. A rumor circulated that the snorkel mask could increase swimming ability, but this is not true. Snorkels are for when you’re just putting your face under the water, and they are listed as an accessory in the Prima guide.
Snorkels are not required to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but they can improve your swimming speed by purchasing a wetsuit from the Nook Shopping. They take up the mask and glasses slot and are not required to dive when swimming in the ocean. You can still dive for Sea Creatures without wearing them.
The snorkel mask can be obtained during the summer from Mabel before building Able Sisters or from the shop once it has opened for 700 Bells. Both snorkels and wetsuits still appear in the game, and the Nook snorkel can be obtained from the miles shop.
In conclusion, the snorkel mask in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is just for looks and does not provide any special abilities or boost your swimming speed. The Nook Inc. snorkel can be obtained from Nook Stop for 500 Nook Miles and is unlocked for use in designing when doing a design.

How to swim faster in Animal Crossing?
The best way to make it across the water as fast as possible is to mash the A button while swimming as fast as possible. This will cause the player’s villager to perform a breast stroke, which is a much faster swimming stroke than a normal one. While this might not be necessary for casual swims, some of the catchable creatures found in the ocean’s depths also move fast such as scallops and snow crabs.
This movement method also works while diving underwater. Players usually need to act extra fast anyway while under the water due to there being a limit for how long players can stay before coming back up for air.
There aren’t any special wet suits that make swimming faster as of yet and there aren’t any accessories or clothing options that affect swimming speeds as well. Additionally, there aren’t any accessories or clothing options that affect how long players can hold their breaths underwater while hunting for creatures.
What happens if a snorkel is too long?
Which is far longer than your breathing muscles would ever allow, but there’s another problem. Because the air has to rub against the walls of the snorkel, there would be a lot more resistance as the tube got longer. Which means that you’d have to exert more pressure to get the air to move.
You could make it easier by having a larger diameter snorkel, like a boba straw, but to keep to that maximum volume, you’d have to shorten the total length. But after all of that, ignoring the physics of pressure and the medical problems with breathing stale air, a long snorkel would just be really inconvenient. Like, I am imagining trying to maneuver with a several-meter long snorkel sticking out of my mouth, trying to keep it at the top of the surface, while I’m down there and it’s trying to go backwards.
And if your snorkel is made out of something that’s buoyant like plastic, the longer it is, the more you’d have to work against the buoyant force pulling you toward the surface. Taking this into account, those same physicists came up with a maximum length of 2.7 meters. Which again, you’d need some sort of mild superstrength to breathe through it that far below the surface.

Is there a trick to catching sharks in Animal Crossing?
Go to any edge of your island and face the ocean. Make sure that you aren’t sprinting; otherwise, the sound of your footsteps may scare fish away. Sharks are far rarer than regular fish, so it may take some time to patrol the ocean around your island and find one to catch. It may help to throw out fish bait that you craft with manila clams.
As usual, you will search for the shadow outline of a fish. Look for a bigger creature with a shark fin sticking out of the water. Cast your line with the “A” button so that the bobber lands in front of the shark. The shark will lightly nibble on the bobber — when it bites and your controller vibrates more intensely, hit “A” again to reel in the shark.
Your villager will catch the shark and proudly display your catch to the camera with fanfare.
There are four types of sharks that you can catch in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, along with how much they would cost to sell at Nook’s Cranny.
What is the point of a snorkel?
A snorkel is a device used for breathing air from above the surface when the wearer’s head is facing downwards in the water with the mouth and the nose submerged. It may be either separate or integrated into a swimming or diving mask. The integrated version is only suitable for surface snorkeling, while the separate device may also be used for underwater activities such as spearfishing, freediving, finswimming, underwater hockey, underwater rugby and for surface breathing with scuba equipment. A swimmer’s snorkel is a tube bent into a shape often resembling the letter “L” or “J”, fitted with a mouthpiece at the lower end and constructed of light metal, rubber or plastic. The snorkel may come with a rubber loop or a plastic clip enabling the snorkel to be attached to the outside of the head strap of the diving mask. Although the snorkel may also be secured by tucking the tube between the mask strap and the head, this alternative strategy can lead to physical discomfort, mask leakage or even snorkel loss.
Snorkels constitute respiratory dead space. When the user takes in a fresh breath, some of the previously exhaled air which remains in the snorkel is inhaled again, reducing the amount of fresh air in the inhaled volume, and increasing the risk of a buildup of carbon dioxide in the blood, which can result in hypercapnia. The greater the volume of the tube, and the smaller the tidal volume of breathing, the more this problem is exacerbated. A smaller diameter tube reduces the dead volume, but also increases resistance to airflow and so increases the work of breathing. Including the internal volume of the mask in the breathing circuit greatly expands the dead space. Occasional exhalation through the nose while snorkeling with a separate snorkel will slightly reduce the buildup of carbon dioxide, and may help in keeping the mask clear of water, but in cold water, it will increase fogging. To some extent the effect of dead space can be counteracted by breathing more deeply and slowly, as this reduces the dead space ratio and work of breathing.
Snorkels come in two orientations: Front-mounted and side-mounted. The first snorkel to be patented in 1938 was front-mounted, worn with the tube over the front of the face, and secured with a bracket to the diving mask. Front-mounted snorkels proved popular in European snorkeling until the late 1950s when side-mounted snorkels came into the ascendancy. Front-mounted snorkels experienced a comeback a decade later as a piece of competitive swimming equipment to be used in pool workouts and in finswimming races, where they outperform side-mounted snorkels in streamlining.
What’s the point of swimming in Animal Crossing?
The new swimming and diving features are all about exploring the ocean around your island, which means there are new sea creatures to catch and rare treasure to find. All you need for this is your wetsuit no net or any other tools required!
When you’re swimming around, you might notice columns of bubbles floating up from beneath the waves. If you swim directly over the bubbles and press Y, your character will dive under and, if you positioned yourself right, come back up with a sea creature, like a sea star or a sea anemone. You can also find new types of vegetation, like seaweed.
Another way to catch sea creatures is to dive underwater and look for little shadows. When you dive, the camera will tilt and give you a better view of what’s below you. Those bubble columns and shadows line up, so an easier way to find creatures is to dive under and swim towards the shadows. Your character will automatically collect whatever’s down there once you reach the shadow.

Does the snorkel in Animal Crossing help?
Snorkels are for when you’re just putting your face under the water, not diving to the seafloor. As someone who snorkels and SCUBAs, snorkeling can be for diving short depths, i.e. 10-15 feet. For what you’re doing in Animal Crossing a snorkel would be perfect, as they make it much easier to clear for air.
