A general rule of thumb: When traveling internationally, don’t expect things to be as if you were at home. In El Salvador, it is our culture to knock on the door of a store and tell the clerk what we want to buy they’ll bring it to us. This is a “Tienda” or Mini Store If you wanna get the same experience as in the U.S; then, you should go to a Mini Super instead, where you can go in and grab what you want and pay at the counter. I was there for my trip, it was super hot, anyways the gang got arrested so there’s no more it is safe, never run away if you see a dog and never pet them. This is what happens when you don’t even bother to do research for a article. The bars on windows has ALWAYS been something standard in many homes in El Salvador, not because of crime, but because most home owners saw it as something standard. Then crime started to pick up in the mid 90’s, this was when gangs started to surge and break ins where very frequent and business owners started to lock their doors. The iron gates and window bars has always been normal in El Salvador, I remember back in the 80’s when there was practically no crime, most homes had them, we never saw it as “something weird” matter of fact, it was more like a decoration.
Everyone says it’s safer now. But yes that strange vibe of places being locked and ringing to enter a hotel or business like that is due to how unsafe and infested with gangs it used to be. Things have gotten better but that doesn’t mean people will fully let their guards down, they had to leave and work like that for decades so it’ll take a while before things fully change.
Yeah. My dad told me that he saw a dead body once when he was a child. That’s how bad it was. Now, it’s a lot better. Though, there’s a lot more police there now and sometimes they randomly ask to a hitch a ride with you (if you’re in a truck) Also, this isn’t really about safety, but I highly recommend not speaking English (unless your too foreign-looking) since once something that was supposed to cost $1 was raised to $10 because they heard my siblings speaking English. (Like yeah, I feel bad for the poverty there, especially since I still have poor family members there, but we’re not exactly making enough money to throw away at people when, again, our own family is still kind of poor, even if we are better off in comparison) Anyways, I’ve been going there since 2011 and never had a moment where I feared for my life (due to violent persons), so it’s alright there. I don’t know if they still do this to this day, but apparently they arrest people who are suspicious-looking often and it’s recommended to have your passport (unless you’re foreign-looking) in case the police think you look like a gang member so that they can’t detain you. (All of this is what my parents told me. Again, I don’t know if they still do this since I get bored of perusal news in Spanish and can’t read Spanish) Side Note: Unlike the United States, people don’t have security or a way to ensure the police will catch a criminal right away (and most people are poor), so it makes sense why they’d keep places locked.
