Foreign nationals who wish to travel to Japan for tourism for a short-term period can apply for a visa online and receive an electronic visa (eVISA) through the JAPAN eVISA system.
As of August 2024, all foreign nationals/people who need to obtain a short-term visa to Japan can select the visa type that is right for them. Temporary visitors are not eligible for eVISA applications, but they can travel to their destination for a limited stay. Hong Kong or Macau residents who are currently residing in Hong Kong or Macau are eligible to make visa applications at the Consulate-General.
Visas are not required for Hong Kong citizens only for holders of Special Administrative Region (SAR) passport issued by the Hong Kong government. The visa-free arrangement for HKSAR passport holders resumed on October 11, 2022, with visa-free access for short-term visits of 90 days. From March 1, 2024, applicants can apply for an electronic visa (eVISA) for a single entry temporary visit for the purposes of tourism.
Japanese citizens do not need a visa for entering Hong Kong for up to 90 days, but holders of a valid HKSAR passport enjoy visa-free access to enter Japan for short-term visits of up to 90 days.
