Do You Get Mosquitoes On Cruise Ships?

Mosquitoes are a common issue on cruise ships, especially in tropical or subtropical destinations with high mosquito populations. While encountering mosquitoes is highly unlikely, it is important to understand the risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases, especially when visiting certain ports of call. Some cruise destinations have endemic vectors, and mosquitoes are found in areas where the water is stagnant. When in port, use a repellant, stay away from areas where mosquitos congregate, and wear light clothing.

Insect-borne allergies are another concern on cruise ships, especially in tropical or subtropical destinations with high mosquito populations. To avoid insect bites, there are no mosquitoes on cruise ships, but they can be present in the warm months of the year, mostly in southern European countries.

Mosquitoes can travel across the Atlantic Ocean and all other oceans, and they may fly several times. They are generally active in the early morning and evening when passengers are likely to be on board. Mosquitoes have limited range and don’t migrate well in strong winds, but most islands have decent onshore breezes that help.

Contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes can occasionally be found on cruise ships. While it is rare, they can be carried aboard unknowingly by flies and mosquitoes. It is almost impossible for flies and mosquitoes to migrate to a island in the middle of the ocean unless the larvae or eggs were somehow transported. Mosquitoes, sand flies, and other biting insects can be a nuisance if passengers spend time on the beach or in the water.

I am a school teacher who was bitten by the travel bug many decades ago. My husband Billy has come along for the ride and now shares my dream to travel the world with our three children. The kids Pollyanna, 13, Cooper, 12 and Tommy 9 are in love with plane trips (thank goodness) and discovering new places, experiences and of course Disneyland.
