Mosquitoes are a rare occurrence on cruise ships, but they can be carried unknowingly by passengers. The first scenario is when the ship is docked at a port, where mosquitoes from the shore may fly onto the ship. Mosquitoes are typically found in areas where the water is stagnant, and not so much on ocean cruises or in port. However, there could be some mosquitoes on a cruise ship, especially during the warm months of the year, mostly in southern European countries.
Insect-borne allergies are another concern on cruise ships, especially in tropical or subtropical destinations with high mosquito populations. To avoid insect bites, passengers should use a repellant, stay away from areas where mosquitos congregate, and wear light colored clothes. Mosquitoes can travel across the Atlantic Ocean and all other oceans, and they may fly several times.
Contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes can occasionally be found on cruise ships. In my experience, no mosquitos are usually present, but flies can sometimes be an issue. Mosquitoes have limited range and don’t mind strong winds, and most islands have decent onshore breezes. Each year varies when it comes to mosquitoes, with Southeast Alaska having a less major problem.
Mosquitoes breed in standing, stagnant water and need relatively calm air to fly effectively. When a ship is underway in the warm climates of the Caribbean, they can spread dengue through mosquito bites, which thrive in warm climates that cruise passengers tend to travel to.
