Do Cruise Ships Have Chaplains?

Cruise ships often provide on-board church services performed by Catholic Priests and Protestant Ministers, especially during religious holidays. A cruise chaplain, classified as an entertainer, is provided with a free cabin and does not receive paid compensation but is provided with a room assigned to them. To ensure smooth religious services on cruise ships, many lines employ religious staff and chaplains. These individuals are often ordained Rabbis or Cantors, who are booked onboard Royal Caribbean ships for Hanukkah and Passover.

The Cruise Ship Priest Program screens and vets potential cruise-ship chaplains and works with partner cruise lines to place a Catholic chaplain on their ships. Carnival respects guests’ religious beliefs and invites them to practice on their own or with other members of their group. However, they do not place clergy on board their ships.

Cruise chaplains offer spiritual and pastoral support, including hearing confession, celebrating Mass, and offering prayers. They do not receive a salary but do not pay the full fare of the typical passenger, making it like a working vacation. Cruise chaplains hold religious services in restaurants or crew mess, usually during unsocial hours.

Cruise lines typically assign clergy as cruise chaplains with free passage, providing services to help crewmen and women in distress. The priest receives his room and basic meals courtesy of the cruise line, but also pays gratuities, purchases excursions, and buys items onboard. As a Mercy Ships Chaplain, the primary focus is to lead, teach, and counsel crew while providing spiritual and moral guidance to all crew members.

Among different ships and crews “banana” can have several meanings, but it often refers to a “bad feeling” or having a “bad time.”

What does a port chaplain do?

What is a Port Chaplain?. In the majority of the ports we work in, our teams are led by an ordained port chaplain. It is their job to provide seafarers support and help to address any issues that they may face so that they can continue to prosper and carry out their vital work. They are responsible for recruiting and training volunteers and planning the welfare response in their port.

Port chaplains are not a new concept – priests have been providing services to seafarers for nearly 200 years. Over the decades their role has evolved to include social services and support for seafarers whilst stationed at their port. When a ship arrives in port, the chaplain will visit the crew to welcome them to the port and to offer any assistance that might be needed.

Chaplaincy teams can provide seafarers with a range of services, such as access to communication, shopping, accessing medical care, transportation or information about the local area.. Communication is often the most important request as many seafarers do not have access to WiFi on board, and as soon as they get into port they want to call home to check in with their loved ones. Our Port Chaplains have been particularly helpful to seafarers through the COVID-19 pandemic as many seafarers have been unable to access shore leave owing to government lockdowns and restrictions. Our teams have gone shopping for seafarers, provided mobile WiFi networks and picked up medication and other items for them.

What does Oscar mean on a ship?

Probably. For one thing, the ship will issue an emergency broadcast to muster its crew. Among the International Flags and Pennants used for maritime signaling, the flag for “O” or “Oscar” indicates man overboard when flown alone. Some vessels have a specific man overboard flagpole where this code flag is flown.

You might hear “Oscar Oscar Oscar” or “Code Oscar” announced to alert the crew. The code “Mr. Mob” may also be used, MOB being the abbreviation and accepted maritime acronym for man overboard.

The cruise ship will then turn around as soon as possible to reach the area where the person landed in the water. When a passenger fell off Oasis of the Seas in November 2015, the ship came to a stop in six minutes, traveling almost a mile from the site before it could turn around. As a passenger, you might feel the ship’s movements as it performs these maneuvers.

If you are out on deck or have a balcony cabin on the side of the ship where the emergency responders are searching, you will likely see lights sweeping the area.

Is anyone on a cruise ship armed?

Yes many cruise ships do, especially ones that sail in waters where modern day pirates operate or are suspected to be. Some have powerful water cannons that can be aimed over the side of the ship to repel any boarders. Some senior crew members keep stun guns or Lazers readily available.

Do cruise ships have religious services?

Some cruise lines do have a resident priest of some sort but this is usually only on the larger ships. Exceptions to this are usually during peak religious periods such as Christmas, Easter, or Hanukkah as well as groups aboard being able to organise their own services in an area such as a reserved conference room. In addition, any religious hosts travelling with the ship may volunteer their services and if so, this is usually declared in the onboard programme or newsletter.

Below is a summary of most line’s religious services onboard their ships but this is subject to vary as per above.

Do fights happen on cruise ships?

This is not the first time a brawl has broken out on one of the company’s cruise ships.

In June 2022, a viral video showed a brawl taking place on a Carnival Magic cruise ship near New York Harbor, which required the Coast Guard to intervene. And in October 2023, the FBI opened an investigation into a passenger being stabbed aboard a Carnival Magic ship.

What does code Papa mean on a cruise ship?

  • Code Alpha: Medical emergency
  • Code Bravo: Fire on board
  • Code Oscar: Man overboard
  • Code Delta: Damage to the ship or flooding emergency
  • Code Echo: Security threat
  • Code Papa: Pollution or spillage
  • Code Sierra: Request for a stretcher team

These Emergency codes help maintain a safe and controlled environment on board, ensuring that both crew and passengers can navigate emergencies effectively.

A better alternative to emergency codes is to use an emergency alert system with clear messages and response options. The response to the emergency will be quicker, and privacy is maintained if only the intended crew members receive a detailed message instead of just the code.

  • During my 2013-2014 deployment on DDG-84 USS Bulkeley, for about 6 of the 9 months we were out we had a chaplain. I really wish I could remember his name. Every night before Taps, he would lead the ship in the evening prayer. Chaps would visit all the watch-stations around once a week checking up on all of us while we stood watch. He definitely gave us someone to talk to outside our chain of command when we needed it. Made deployment feel just a little easier.
