What is the controversy with Spirit Airlines?

Spirit, a low-cost airline, has expanded air travel access for many customers but has also been seen as the epitome of everything that’s gone wrong with flying. Its never-ending search for cost savings has made it notorious for pioneering unpopular practices such as restricting refunds, shrinking seats, and charging for even the most basic amenities. Spirit tends to show up near the bottom of on-time-arrival rates and near the top of the consumer-complaint rankings.

The fundamental problem in air travel today is not lack of competition; it’s the lack of sensible regulation to channel competition to public purposes. Airlines are networks, which can offer better service when they provide seamless connectivity to lots of different people going to lots of different places. In the absence of competition enforcement, airlines tend toward monopolization. However, lack of regulation can also work in the opposite direction when leaving these businesses facing too much competition.

During the mid-19th century, this dynamic was at the core of what was once known as “the railroad problem”. Railroads responded to their financial losses by neglecting maintenance and degrading service. They waged rate wars wherever they faced competition and price-gouged wherever they managed to hold on to or create a local monopoly, usually in smaller, far-flung towns. The fate of local economies could depend on whether they were served by competing railroads or by only a single carrier.

Does Spirit offer compensation for delayed flights?

Spirit Airlines may offer up to $650 in compensation per person for flight delays or cancellations, as the airline’s latest on-time performance data indicates that none of the 20 flight departures in the last 24 hours commenced at the scheduled time.

  • That’s not true. I was told the same thing by a flight attendant on Spirit flight. I tried it twice in Los Angeles and it was a joke. Not only it’s more expensive, it keeps going up if you try to check other dates and go back to your original date. The counter person on both occasions told me That’s how it works, the price keeps going up and it’s probably cheaper to do it online. I was trying to book flights three months out. Prove you did it.
