Are Hurtigruten in financial trouble?

The Group continues to see improvement in financial performance in Q4 2023, focus is on building occupancy to support earnings recovery and growth. Total revenue in fourth quarter 2023 was EUR 146 million for the Group, a EUR 10 million increase compared to fourth quarter of 2022.

The Group had negative EBITDA of EUR 34.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to negative EUR 32.7 million in the same period last year. This lower EBITDA is largely driven by one-off SG&A costs relating to ongoing advisor costs for various workstreams including split of the businesses (EUR 8.9 million), partially offset by an increase in revenue.

Net cash outflow from operating activities in fourth quarter of 2023 was EUR 10 million compared to an outflow of EUR 6 million in fourth quarter 2022, driven by negative EBITDA partially offset by working capital inflow. Net cash outflow from investing activities was EUR 10 million in fourth quarter 2023 compared to an outflow of EUR 18 million in fourth quarter 2022 mainly related to capital expenditures for environmental ship upgrades on Hurtigruten vessels and scheduled dockings.

What are Hurtigruten boats like?

Some of the Hurtigruten ships are the size of cruise ships. They do not enter the fjords except in summer they do a tour to Geiranger and otherwise Hjørundfjord. They are though not traditional cruises and offer less in the way of entertainment. Many of the stops are short but a few are long enough for you to explore.

Can you hop on and off Hurtigruten?

PORT-TO-PORT VOYAGES. Hurtigruten is perfect for shorter voyages. These so-called port-to-port voyages are often enjoyed also by Norwegians using the ships as a ferry service along the coast, which is really what the Hurtigruten concept is designed for. The ships service 34 ports along the Norwegian coast (same ports going north and south), so that people living in these remote outposts have regular transport options in and out. So, do contact us at 50 Degrees North and speak to a local, and ask for advice. You can really hop on and off as you like, although this becomes a bit of a challenge when pre-booking. Our tip for you: combining a short voyage with a magnificent stay in a fisherman’s cabin (rorbu) in the Lofoten archipelago is something really worthwhile that most people miss out on.

Just note that unfortunately, Hurtigruten is unable to offer guaranteed cabin numbers for port-to-port and short voyages (less than 5 nights).

What is the dress code on Hurtigruten ships?

Hurtigruten does not have a formal dress code, and comfort is a priority. Shipboard attire generally is very casual both day and night, even in the dining room. Many guests dress in layers for warmth in cooler destinations.

Plan to wear rubber-soled, flat or low-heeled shoes for activities on deck.

Is there entertainment on Hurtigruten ships?

Entertainment. The emphasis on board Hurtigruten ships is on relaxation and getting away from the commercial entertainment which is so often a part of conventional cruises. The aim is to get closer to unique environments and share the experience with fellow passengers. Occasionally some musical entertainment on some stretches of the voyage may be offered but there is no organised programme.

The Theme voyages will be accompanied by lecturers as described.

Information. There will be an information meeting on board on the evening of departure from Bergen and Kirkenes. You will also receive an information pack. In addition, a Daily Bulletin will keep you informed during your journey.

Does Hurtigruten cruises include food?

The BASIC fare gives you access to all the core services and facilities on board, at our lowest price. When booking, you’ll be able to choose from three general cabin categories: Arctic Superior, Polar Outside, and Polar Inside. Your specific cabin number will be assigned to you at check-in, after coming aboard. The Basic fare includes all three daily meals in the main restaurant, with pre-allocated meal times.

How much is the meal on Hurtigruten?

The prices quoted on Hurtigruten’s website are Kr135 for breakfast, Kr285 for lunch and Kr395 for dinner. These are the prices charged on board. Hurtigruta is expensive. It is quite acceptable to bring a packed meal onboard, sandwiches, fruit etc. The cafeteria is cheaper than the restaurant, but the buffet is good though And you can really fill up.
