The ocean is colder than most lakes and rivers, especially in the Pacific Ocean. Water skiers are at risk of hypothermia after spending time in the water, which can lead to reduced brain function and organ failure. Jet skis can be ridden on the ocean, but the saltwater will aggressively corrode their metal parts if not cleaned off. After each ride, you’ll need to clean your PWC’s hull, pump, and engine compartment.
The ocean can be more unforgiving than a river or lake due to its powerful water. Be prepared for waves and don’t panic if you fall off your ski. Taking your jet ski into coastal and ocean waters is an entirely different game than just zipping around in a river or lake setting. Proper equipment and safety measures are crucial. Understanding ocean conditions and marine life is essential when riding a jet ski in the open ocean.
Riding a jet ski in the ocean poses significant dangers due to strong ocean currents, unpredictable weather conditions, and potential collisions with marine wildlife. It is not a replacement for a larger boat, and it is important to be aware of what to expect so that you don’t go in blind. With careful preparation, you are sure to have a great experience.
Apr 25, 2020, Hi, can you water-ski and/or wakeboard in the ocean as you would in a quite lake? Yes, it can be tough to get started, and with a few waves it will challenge your skills but is tons of fun. Make sure your boat is up to speed, especially in intercoastal areas. Even if it’s a bathtub with a trolling motor on it, a NO Wake Zone applies to all vehicles passing through that area. Many people take their tubesskis and riders to calm water, such as one side of a bay or a wind-protected shoreline.
In conclusion, water-skiing and wakeboarding in the ocean presents unique challenges and requires careful preparation.

Thanks for the article. Very interested in slaloming behind the FishPro. I tried slaloming on my 2021 FishPro for the first time just a couple of days ago. I sort of freaked out the guy driving the FP because when I cut hard it really pulled the FP around like a rag doll. Do you have any advice on how to make it more stable for slaloming? We did not have a spotter (I know we should for safety) nor did we have the ski pylon. I will say it was a very short rope as well. let me know if you have any advice.
