Can You Take Your Dog Kayaking?

The size of your dog and the type of kayak you choose will determine the best place for your pet to stay on the kayak. A sit-on kayak is ideal for allowing more space and most dogs will lie down when they relax. Reward your dog when they are in the chosen smooth, calm waters, especially for the first time or two. Start in a quiet lake, pond, or bay where it is easy for your dog to swim to shore if needed. Even after your dog is used to boating, stick to calmer waters like rivers, lakes, and creeks.

Kayaking with a dog is safe and enjoyable with proper preparation. However, not all kayaks are suitable for bringing your dog along for the journey. We recommend an open deck or cockpit-style boat. Always use life jackets for your dogs in kayaks or small water vessels. They should be familiar with what is expected of them.

How to fit a dog in a kayak?

Your options are: having them sit on a flatter surface of the kayak OR sit in the recessed cockpit area with you, if there’s room. A smaller dog could probably fit in close to you. A larger dog will need their own space.

John and I have a tandem kayak with flat space between the seats. For Gus, being a medium sized dog, that worked perfectly.

Be prepared to get wet when you kayak with a dog. Maybe your dog loves water. Maybe you don’t know how your dog will react. And heck, there’s always risk that a kayak can flip, even without a dog. So, take precautions and plan for the worst case scenario, just in case.

Let’s assume your kayak stays upright and your pup doesn’t fall or jump into the water. Remember that you’ll both still get wet while getting in and out of the kayak. Pack some towels for the car ride home.

Next on the list is to make sure that you and your pet have a Portable Flotation Device, also known as a Life Jacket. PFD’s for dogs can be purchased at a variety of pet stores and on Amazon. Also be sure to have a harness for your pet. This will allow you to get your pet back into the water easier if he or she jumps out.
