Is it sanitary to rent snorkel gear?

Renting beach gear from the experts. The process for cleaning and sanitizing snorkels and masks is a standard that Boss Frog’s Hawaii employees take seriously. At all ten locations on Maui, three locations on Kauai and one in Kailua Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, rental gear is received and processed in the same way. Once returned, masks and snorkels are separated from fins and bags. The mask and snorkels are placed in a large sink, where they are soaked in a mixture of dish soap and hospital grade sanitizer for one hour. They are then individually scrubbed by hand, rinsed and hung to dry before returning to the rack for rental. This ensures that all of the gear going out is safe and germ free. It also aids in reducing mask fog while snorkeling.

Freedivers and Long Fins. If you visit many of the great snorkel spots on the big island you may see some people wearing spelt wetsuits a mask and snorkel weight belts and carrying Long Blade fins. These are known as free divers. The big island is one of the best places in the world to do freediving. the sport involves diving down just as you would when you are snorkeling with the aim of being as efficient as possible. You’ll notice the things they carry are quite long. You might think this is because they have more power. This is not necessarily true, because freedivers aren’t really looking for power. and free diving you have to use the one breath you have to the best of your ability. This means empathizing efficiency. These Long Blade spins allow you to move more efficiently through the water.

As a free diver do you have to wear fins when snorkeling? No. Many free divers will dive without fins and sometimes without a mask! This is a discipline known as no fins freediving. traditionally freediving is done with Long Blade fins. This is because you can dive deeper with these fans done without. Some free divers even use what are known as monofins. These massive mermaid tail looking fins allow freedivers to move more quickly and efficiently through the water than traditional by fins. The last record for diving on a single breath with a mono fin was 130 meters (427ft)! This is the equivalent of swimming almost 3 football fields straight down and back up. Your lungs shrink to 1/12 their original size at this depth.

Is there a shuttle to Hanauma Bay?

Is it safe to rent a snorkel?

They soak them in a bleach solution, so any germs should be deader than doornails. I’ve yet to hear of any “outbreaks” of illness because of snorkel equipment. If you’re germaphobic, bring your own. Otherwise, you’ll be safe enough.

I’m not a germ-o-phobe, but I don’t understand why people worry themselves to death over hand sanitizer onboard and the dangers of NoroVirus, and then happily pop in a stranger’s snorkeling mouthpiece.

I always bring my own. I’m not a big-time snorkeler, so my snorkel came from (oh, the shame) the clearance rack at CVS… but it does the job. If space is a consideration, bring along just the mouthpiece. I don’t have a problem with using someone else’s mask and fins but I’m just not going to put someone else’s mouthpiece in my mouth.

I know they SAY they’ve been sanitized, but every time I’ve been on any kind of trip, I’ve never seen any evidence of any cleaning products. I just feel more comfortable KNOWING what I’m using.

Yes! If someone in your party is planning to come along, but not snorkel, there is a reduced fee option for $39.95 (plus the $25 park entrance fee). However, there is NO charge for children 3 years and younger.

Is Hanauma Bay beginner friendly?

Luckily, Hanauma Bay is great for beginner snorkelers. The water is pretty shallow, and there aren’t typically strong currents or waves. However, you should always swim with a buddy while snorkeling!

For beginners, I recommend checking out Triangle Lagoon and Keyhole Lagoon, which are right off the beach! For more experienced snorkelers, the Channel and Outer Reef are further out into the lagoon, and here you’ll find bigger fish and possibly sea turtles!

In terms of types of fish around the Bay, you might see triggerfish, parrotfish, goatfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, tang, surgeonfish, and more! Make sure to keep a look out for the state fish of Hawaii, the reef triggerfish, also known as the humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa.

Do you need fins to snorkel at Hanauma Bay?
