A car snorkel is an aftermarket accessory designed for vehicles that tackle challenging environments, such as deep water or dusty trails. It is an elevated air intake system that improves performance and fuel efficiency by blocking dust and water from entering the air intake under the vehicle’s wheel well. The installation process involves carving a hole in the fender and drilling bolts through the vehicle body.
A snorkel can help prevent stalling due to water in the intake, but cars are not built to drive through more than 2-3 inches of standing water. To ensure a perfect snorkel fit, it is essential to buy one made specifically for your vehicle. While it is possible to customize a snorkel, the best bet is to purchase one made specifically for your vehicle.
In India, snorkels are mostly used for leisure 4WD vehicles to allow the crossing of rivers without causing damage to the engine. If your vehicle is primarily used on normal urban roads, a snorkel is not a necessity. However, if your vehicle is primarily used on off-road terrain, a snorkel may not be necessary.
To install a car snorkel, follow these steps: drill the big hole, debur the hole and paint edges, rivet A-pillar bracket, and drill fender holes. Disconnect the original air intake system so that the engine receives air through the snorkel.
