Imron Clear by Dupont is the paint of choice for clear gel coats, but it is a very big job. To restore a fiberglass boat finish, you can use epoxy and a clear coat like varnish or Ad wax in styrene to the gel coat. Use a paint spray gun with a 2.5-3mm tip, a cheap one will be about 60. Once it cures, spray with a foam roller tipped over with a foam brush. The technique shown on the CLC website can yield a perfect or near-perfect finish if done well.
Polyester is chemically resistant, so there is zero chemical adhesion to help you out. You can use a foam roller tipped over with a foam brush to clean the working area with diluted KBS Klean. Scour all surfaces to be clear-coated. A couple coats of varnish or auto-clear-coat, brushed or sprayed, should do all the sealing that you need.

How long do fiberglass canoes last?
How long does a fiberglass boat last? The short answer to that question is — as long as you need them to!
If you care for and maintain a fiberglass boat as recommended, it can last up to 50 years or longer. This is why fiberglass is the most popular material for constructing boats and personal watercraft. It’s likely to outlast any wood or metal components on the boat. Let’s explore the typical lifespan of fiberglass boats and how you can maximize it.
Understanding Fiberglass Boats. Fiberglass is made from either polyester resin or epoxy resin, reinforced with layers of glass fiber. Fiberglass boat construction starts in a factory mole. The first layer is a gel coat, followed by a fiberglass cloth layer. Resin gets applied on each layer until it reaches the desired thickness. This results in a boat that is light enough to be buoyant. It is also very tough and harder to crack than regular glass or plastic. Also, fiberglass is more resistant to corrosion from UV rays and saltwater — making it an excellent choice for boat construction.
Average Lifespan of Fiberglass Boats. A fiberglass boat can last much longer than the pickup truck that you use to haul it to the lake! As mentioned above, we’ve seen fiberglass boats that are more than 50 years old still float as long as they receive proper maintenance. A span of 30 to 40 years is more realistic, though. You may not need the same boat for decades anyway. If your life situation changes, you might find yourself looking for a different boat in a few years.
What kind of paint will stick to fiberglass?
A basic spray paint or latex-acrylic paint will do just fine on a decorative piece or a door. Polyurethane or epoxy paint are better suited to surfaces that will see a lot of heavy use, such as boats, bathtubs, and sinks.
Polyurethane paint is ready to use. Epoxy paint must be mixed with a catalyst, just like epoxy resin. The catalyst is usually sold with the epoxy paint.;
Most polyurethane and epoxy paints do not require primers, but most spray paints and latex-acrylic paints do. If your paint requires a primer, make sure that you buy the same kind of primer and topcoat (i.e. spray paint primer for spray paint, oil-based primer and topcoat for oil-based paint, etc.).

- Set the topcoat aside for later.
How do you protect a fiberglass canoe?
A UV inhibitor such asUV Techor303 Protectantwill help protect Royalex, plastic and gel-coat finishes from fading. Think of 303 as “sunscreen” for your canoe. Apply 303 Protectant2 to 4 times per season. Though not as effective, Armorall also works.
Note:Frontenac Outfitters does NOT recommend waxing your boats hull. Although waxing will do no harm, it actuallydecreases hull speedand it interferes with 303’s UV protection.
GEL-COAT CANOE REPAIRS. Exposed fibreglass or Kevlar cloth could “wick” water into the cloth, which could in time begin to separate the boats cloth & gelcoat layers. A simple fix is to fill the area with 5- minute epoxy, for a more visually appealing repair we use gelcoat.
Will clear coat stick to fiberglass?
As with any painting, preparation proves crucial. In this case, it’s necessary to remove contaminants such as grease, oil, grime, scum or residual wax, and lightly scuff the surface to ensure strong adhesion. Use KBS Klean, a concentrated water-based cleaning solution. Dilute with 10 parts warm water to one part of KBS Klean and use a spray bottle to liberally wet the surface. Scrub thoroughly with a scouring pad, continually to wetting the working area with diluted KBS Klean. Scour all surfaces to be clear-coated. Then rinse with fresh water and allow to dry. Afterward, the surface should take on a dull finish.
Whether rolling, brushing or spraying, it’s best to remove as many elements as feasible before getting underway with the process to prevent inadvertently getting clear coat on these items. On the interior, this includes removal of upholstered seats and panels, snap-in deck coverings, instrumentation, hand rails, teak or other wood items, and other elements. On the exterior, this includes windshields and frames, navigation lights, cleats and other hardware. To protect any adjacent surfaces that you can’t or don’t want to remove, use masking tape and masking paper to cover them up.
Do not shake the can of DiamondFinish Clear, as this can introduce air bubbles that will mar the finish. Instead, wearing protective gloves and eye wear and working in a well-ventilated area, pour a working amount into a steel or glass container. For long-term storage, put the remain product in a Mason jar. The ideal temperature for rolling on the clear coat between 60 to 82 degrees F with low humidity. Based on these conditions, thin the DiamondFinish Clear by 10 percent using KBS #1 Thinner (or Xylene). Stir thoroughly and frequently. On hot days, thin by as 30 percent ensure proper flows. Stir the container thoroughly and frequently.
Can you make fiberglass clear?
Fiberglass cloth absorbs epoxy resin slowly, so give it time to absorb. The epoxy must displace all the air surrounding each fiber in each strand in the cloth to become transparent. It’s best not to over work resin into a small area until the glass is totally wet-out because this can introduces bubbles. Apply resin to the cloth and move on, to coat the next area, giving the resin a little time to soak in.
Fiberglass cloth is coated with a special sizing to make it compatible with epoxy resin. This sizing is sensitive to water and can be damaged or removed if water comes in contact with it. The result will be a glass weave that looks white. Be careful not to have water on a surface or on your hands, that could come in contact with fiberglass cloth. Be wary of a “sale” on cloth that might be water damaged.
How do you prepare fiberglass for gelcoat?
Wipe the fiberglass down with acetone to remove grease and wax. This step is especially important if you’re gel-coating old fiberglass that already has a coating on it. Removing any grease or wax on the fiberglass will help the gelcoat adhere better to the material’s surface.

Gelcoat is a liquid that hardens to form a thick layer that’s used to protect fiberglass and give it a shiny, smooth finish. Applying gelcoat to fiberglass is simple if you have the right tools and take care to mix your gelcoat properly.
Epoxy filler, although a great product is not suitable for a gel-cote top coat. Polyester gel-cotes will not chemically bond to epoxy. You’ll want to take care of any damage on the fiberglass first so you have a smooth surface to apply the gelcoat to. To fill in damaged areas, start by sanding them with coarse 36 grit sandpaper to remove any debris. Then, fill in the damaged areas with the polyester filler using a plastic spreader.
How do you clear fiberglass?
To clean fiberglass dust and debris from surfaces, use wet mops and cloths or a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter. Do not dry sweep or perform other activities that may stir up dust.
Should I wax my fiberglass canoe?

Can you refinish a fiberglass canoe?
After years of use and storage, the paint on fiberglass canoes starts to look chalky and faded. Luckily, you can bring your fiberglass canoe back to life relatively easily with a new paint job! First, clean and sand the canoe to prepare it for painting. Make sure to repair any major cracks or gouges with a gelcoat repair kit as well. Then, apply 2 fresh coats of marine paint using a paintbrush and a small paint roller. Your canoe will be looking like new and ready for the water again in just a few days!
You’ll be working outdoors for this job and you’ll have to let the canoe dry overnight a couple of times. Make sure you start working on a clear, dry day when there are at least 2 more rain-free days coming up.
You can move the canoe inside a garage or other covered storage space overnight if you want, but you’ll still have to let the canoe dry for several hours after each coat of paint before you can pick it up to move it.;
What to coat a fiberglass boat with?
Epifanes Epoxy Primerand Epifanes Epoxy HB Coat are epoxy based primers. These two-component primers are very tough and give the best long-term protection. Professionals normally apply around 2 layers of primer. Due to the toughness of the primer, they commonly apply a Poly-urethane Primer before applying the top coat. The Poly-urethane Primer is very easy to sand and gives a good adhesion for the final top coat.
For deep penetration into the gelcoat, it is important to thin the first coat by 25%. Apply at least 2 primer coats for sufficient protection. After curing, it is important to sand each primer coat thoroughly with grit 180 before applying a topcoat. Sanding will create a good adhesion between primer coats and topcoat. A lack of sanding will lead to bad adhesion and might even de-adhere final coats.

This traditional one-component yacht enamel is very suitable for painting above the waterline. This classic alkyd paint flows very well and can be applied by anyone. In addition, it is available in 45 traditional colours.
Does gelcoat go over fiberglass?
Gel coat is the most common surface coating used in the fabrication and repair of fiberglass reinforced products. Our Low Emissions Gel Coat is a specially formulated two-part polyester resin that is designed to be the first layer of resin applied in a mold when making a polyester or vinyl ester composite part. It is intended to create an opaque surface which will completely block glass pattern show-through. Polyester resins in general, and specifically gel coats, are naturally UV resistant, and properly cured parts can be submerged in water. Most boats are made using gel coat with polyester resin and fiberglass. Composite parts are generally made in a female mold. Our Low Emissions gel coat would be applied to a prepared mold surface and then backed with layers of reinforcement (usually fiberglass) and additional resin. When the part is removed from the mold, this gel coat surface would be the exterior surface of the part. A red boat is usually red because the fabricator used red gel coat.
While gel coat can be applied by brush or roller, we strongly recommend the use of spray equipment. Fibre Glast offers spray guns specifically for gel coat. Item #126-A is a gravity fed HVLP-style gun that features a 2.5mm nozzle, which is an excellent starting point for spraying gel coat. The #126 gun is suitable for both small and medium areas, typically medium repairs and small parts/molds. Item #134-A is a pressure fed HVLP style gun. It features a 3.0mm nozzle and can be used for medium sized projects, typically a large repair or medium sized part or mold. Finally our #120-A Gel Coat Cup Gun is a dump gun. There are a variety of nozzle sizes available for different materials, but the primary use of this gun is to quickly apply gel coat to large areas. It is most frequently used for new part and mold construction rather than repairs.
Coverage. Coverage will vary depending on application techniques and desired thickness. Typically, however, one gallon of gel coat will cover between 40-80 square feet at 20-25 mils.
