Is it worth buying a drinks package on a cruise?

Bottom line. Buying a drink package on a cruise ship instead of paying for drinks individually can be a good way to save when cruising. But they aren’t for everyone. Drink packages generally make sense only for cruisers who typically order large numbers of drinks every day or particularly expensive drinks such as premium cocktails. For cruisers who only have one or two or three drinks a day, or order low-cost drinks such as beers, a cruise drink package generally doesn’t make sense.

Do your bags get searched on a cruise?

In addition to prohibited items, cruise lines check for items that could harm other passengers or damage the ship. These can include fireworks, drones, or anything considered a hazard. When boarding a cruise ship, passengers’ luggage undergoes a thorough security screening process, just like at airports. Here’s what typically happens:

  • Security Screening: All passengers and their luggage must be checked before boarding. This includes X-raying carry-on bags and checked luggage to ensure compliance with safety regulations and to detect prohibited items.
  • Luggage Collection and Delivery: Upon arrival at the terminal, checked luggage is collected by porters and sent through security screening. After screening, the luggage is delivered directly to passengers’ cabins.
  • Prohibited Items: If any prohibited items are found during the screening process, security may hold the luggage until the items are removed or properly accounted for.

Reviewing the cruise line’s luggage policies is important before you pack your bags for your next cruise. Check the company’s website for specific information on what is and isn’t allowed on board. We have a detailed guide on MSC Cruise policies that you can read. In general, it’s a good idea to pack light and avoid bringing unnecessary items. Cruise ships have laundry facilities, and many items you might need, such as shampoo and soap, are provided. If you plan to bring alcohol on board, adhere to the cruise line’s policy. Most lines allow passengers to bring one or two bottles of wine or champagne but check to see if there are any restrictions on the size or type of bottle allowed. When packing your bags, ensure you don’t leave any prohibited items in your luggage.

How much is a bottle of wine on a cruise?

How much does a glass of wine usually cost onboard? What about a bottle?. Wines range in price, depending on the quality. You might pay as little as $6 for a “house” white or red, or as much as $18 to $20 for a glass of a well-rated wine from a known vineyard. Bottles of wine might start at $25 to $30 for a basic varietal like pinot grigio or merlot and go up to several hundred dollars, depending on quality. In general, expect a markup similar to restaurants about two or three times what you’d pay in a wine store on land.

How can I find out which wines my ship will have onboard?. It can be surprisingly hard to find this information. Because wines can change from sailing to sailing, cruise lines usually don’t publish their wine lists online. In the Cruise Critic forums, passengers often upload photos of wine lists, both by the glass and by the bottle. Sending an email to the cruise line might also elicit information.

Are wines included in a drink package? If so, how do I find out which ones?. A limited number of wines by the glass are included in most drink packages. Included wines are chosen based on price. For example, in a basic drink package, glasses of wine up to $6 to $8 might be covered. A premium drink package might allow for wines that cost up to $12 or $15.

Can I bring a bottle of wine on my Carnival cruise?

Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board with the following exception – at the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring one 750-ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne, per person, in their carry-on luggage.* Outside this exception, …

Proper travel documentation is required at embarkation and throughout the cruise. Even though a guest has completed registration using Online Check-in, it is still the responsibility of the guest to present the required travel documents at the time of embarkation. Guests should check with their travel agent and/or government authority to determine the travel documents necessary for each port of call. Any guest without proper documents will not be allowed to board the vessel and no refund of the cruise fare will be issued. Carnival assumes no responsibility for advising guests of proper travel documentation.

Except where it is a mandatory requirement, Carnival highly recommends that all guests travel with a passport book. The passport book must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. This will enhance the debarkation experience as delays may be expected upon return to the United States for those without one. Additionally, this will enable guests to fly from the United States to meet their ship at a foreign port should they miss their scheduled port of embarkation and allow guests who must disembark the ship before their cruise ends, due to an emergency, to fly back to the United States without significant delays and complications.

For cruises that begin and end in the same U.S port, the following WHTI-compliant documents are acceptable for cruise travel. Please note that if the cruise visits Colombia or Greenland, a passport book(valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel) is required. A passport card with the same validity is also acceptable for cruises to Colombia.

Guests who are under the permitted drinking age will not have alcohol returned to them. Please Note: All guests must comply with TSA guidelines for transporting liquids.

On embarkation day, each guest of drinking age may bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne. Boxed wine and other containers are prohibited. Guests who purchase alcohol bottles onboard, in a port-of-call, or bring more than the one permitted bottle on boarding day, will have their items safely stored by the ship. These bottles will be returned on the last day onboard for enjoyment once home.

What is the most expensive drink on a Carnival cruise ship?

Carnival Cruise Line Fun-loving Carnival fans will find mostly modestly-priced drinks throughout the cruise lines menus, with the exception of your average bottle of Dom Perignon ($225).

When the newest Disney Cruise Line ship, Disney Wish, launched in the summer of 2022, one of the buzziest stories on board was the swirling speculation around the mysterious $5,000 beverage available in the brand-new Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge.

What was in this cocktail to warrant such a high price tag? And what was up with all the secrecy surrounding it? The answer, thanks to a handful of influencers and other passengers who coughed up the funds to test it out: The Kaiburr Crystal is a flight of rare spirits and a cocktail served in an intriguing vessel, along with some take-home swag and tickets to visit Skywalker Ranch. The speculation continued: did it merit such a price tag, rivaling the cost of the entire vacation? The real shock is that this isn’t even the most expensive drink on a Disney cruise (more on that later).

The hype around that cocktail got us thinking: What are the most expensive drinks on other cruise lines, and what’s the allure of ordering the most expensive thing on the menu? Whether you’re a high roller, or you just want to take a peek at how the other half drinks, here are some of the most eye-poppingly expensive cruise ship beverages you’ll find on the high seas. Do cruise ships check your bags for alcohol?

Body Scanners. While cruise ships don’t typically have the scanning technology you’ll find at airports, you’ll still have your luggage scanned and need to walk through an X-ray machine.

This machine can detect any liquids you may be carrying on your person, meaning you can’t hide any small bottles of alcohol in your pockets!

Room Inspections. Even if you somehow get past the cruise ship scanner with your booze, there’s still a chance of getting caught sneaking alcohol. Any cruise line can inspect any cruise passenger’s room for any reason. You’ll find this in your cruise contract, where you can also read the alcohol policy.

While most cruise lines aren’t in the habit of doing random searches, there’s still a possibility that they’ll search your cabin, especially if they suspect something is wrong.
