With proper preparation, you and your dog can kayak together and have a grand adventure. Some tips include choosing a clear, calm, and quiet area, bringing your kayak into a neutral space, and placing the kayak in a yard or park where your dog can sniff it and walk around it.

Can a dog fit in an ORU kayak?

It happens when our inner ears which control balance feel motion but our eyes don’t see it, and these two conflicting signals create a neural mismatch in the brain. This mismatch can confuse the brain and make it think we’ve been poisoned. Histamine neurotransmitters then take messages to our stomachs to get rid of the toxin. What we are left with is a queasy stomach that thinks it needs to empty itself!

Since the inner ears aren’t fully developed in young mammals, puppies are often more susceptible to motion sickness than older dogs, though they can grow out of it. And since many dogs are either too small to see out the windows or are often stuck in the backseat, their view of the trip usually doesn’t match the motion they feel when the car is moving, which can increase their feeling of travel sickness.

How to fit a dog in a kayak?

Your options are: having them sit on a flatter surface of the kayak OR sit in the recessed cockpit area with you, if there’s room. A smaller dog could probably fit in close to you. A larger dog will need their own space.

Be prepared to get wet when you kayak with a dog. Maybe your dog loves water. Maybe you don’t know how your dog will react. And heck, there’s always risk that a kayak can flip, even without a dog. So, take precautions and plan for the worst case scenario, just in case.
