John Wayne’s yacht, Wild Goose, was built in Seattle in 1943 as a mine sweeper for the U.S. Navy. Its hull is made of three-inch-thick slabs of Douglas Fir and was previously owned by Harold. The yacht is now owned by Hornblower Cruises in Newport Beach, California, which hosts various events and cruises for fans of The Duke. John Wayne’s passion for the water never left, inspiring him to purchase his beloved vessel.
The Wild Goose was originally a U.S. Navy Yard Mine Sweeper known as USS YMS. Before becoming John Wayne’s yacht, it was a warship. In 1975, about 10 Sequimites formed a yacht club while cruising in the San Juan Islands. John Wayne donated acreage at the club in the early 60s.
The Wild Goose remains docked in Newport Harbor, less than a mile from Lido House, and is now owned and operated by Hornblower Cruises. The 136-foot-long yacht served as a favorite getaway vessel for Wayne to spend time with his kids and friends. The 19m boat was built in 1933 in Massachusetts for the coast guard. In the 40s, it was bought by John Wayne and renamed Marguerita after his name.
John Wayne was born in Winterset, Iowa, but grew up in Southern California. After losing his football scholarship to the University of Southern California due to a car accident, he purchased the Wild Goose, a luxury vessel that he took on fishing trips to Mexico, Alaska, and through the Panama Canal.
