Can you bring your own kayak to Deleon Springs?
John James Audubon visited these popular springs in 1832, which he dubbed a “garden with beautiful flowers and a pure sky.” It was here that he reportedly encountered his first Limpkin; modern-day birders can still find this bird as well, along with splendid scenery and much more. Located just north of Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, the Spring Garden Run from this state park flows into Lake Woodruff. Hike the 4 mile Wild Persimmon Trail (register at the ranger station first) through hydric hammock, floodplain forest and old fields – look for songbirds during spring and fall migration; 15 species of wood-warbler have been recorded including Cerulean and Tennessee. The trail can be challenging, and portions may be flooded at times. For a shorter journey, take the short paved, wheelchair accessible nature trail which passes through a hardwood hammock. A concessionaire-run, 50-minute boat tour leaves from the recreation area’s dock and takes trips down to Lake Woodruff, an excellent way to see Bald Eagle, wading birds and wintering ducks. You can also paddle your way into the wildlife refuge (kayak/canoe rentals are available in the park, or you can bring your own) to explore the marshes and waterways.

How long is the bike trail at Fort DeSoto?
On the Park Trail. The 7-mile paved bike trail starts from the boat ramp near the park entrance ramp, then runs south to connect beaches, campground, picnicking, pier, and the historic fort.
From the park exit going north along SR679 (Pinellas Bayway S.), a connector runs to the Bayway Trail which connects St. Petersburg Beach to the Sunshine Skyway.
Historic Fort DeSoto dates from 1898, built to defend Tampa Bay during the Spanish-American War but never saw battle and was abandoned in 1923. The land was obtained by Pinellas County in 1948 and the park developed. Visitors at the fort can see the remaining battery and mortars.
Can you kayak to Egmont Key from Fort Desoto?
Launching from Fort Desoto. The ideal place to launch from if you are paddling to Egmont Key is Fort Desoto Park. Not only is the paddle a bit easier than launching from Anna Maria (see below), but there is plenty to do and see at Fort Desoto, including, you guessed it, another fort!
Camping. Another great advantage to launching from Fort Desoto is that you can camp there! Plan a three day weekend (or midweek trip) and spend the middle day paddling out to Egmont Key and Battery Burchsted.

How do you get into a canoe without tipping?
Ken: First of all, if you’re launching from a beach or other shallow shoreline, you’ll wanna position your canoe perpendicular to the shore. The person who will be sitting in the near position will now stabilize the canoe while the other person steps in and walks the length of the canoe to their position. When doing this, stay low and slide your hands along the gunnels for support as you move one step at a time with your feet placed over the center line of the canoe. When the first person is settled into their position and ready, the other can then step into the canoe while staying as low as possible.
To get out of a canoe on a similar shoreline, you’ll approach the shore straight on and follow these same steps in reverse, with the bow paddler stepping out of the canoe first to stabilize the boat as the stern paddler keeps their weight low and walks down the length of the canoe to get out.
The second technique for getting into and out of a canoe is used from a dock or a deep shoreline. In this case, you will position the canoe parallel to the dock or shore. As before, one person stabilizes the canoe while the other person gets in first. The trick when getting in from the side is keeping low and reaching across the canoe so that you have a hand on either gunnel as you step into the center of the canoe one foot at a time. If the dock is particularly high off the water, you might need to start from a sitting position on the dock. To get out, you’ll do the exact same thing in reverse.
How far can 2 people canoe in a day?
It also helps to know how to calculate the distance you’ve gone on the portage (or lake or river). It can be difficult at times. There are way too many variables. For example, it may be possible for a canoeist to paddle up to 24 km a day. Add a portage or two to the trip, however, and the distance can be cut in half. It’s also possible for a backpacker to cover up to 30 km a day on a well-marked trail. But off trail, they’re lucky to get up to 16 km.
