My mother who is Indo-Guyanese, married an American Black man (and divorced him after she had me). So she brought me back to my grandparents who fell in love with me. Never judged my skin color – and I’m darker than my mom. The only person I remember having issues with my skin color was really my now ex aunt, who’s from a very Indian family. I will never forget the colorism she portrayed between me and my cousins…and taught her daughters the same way… from bleaching their skin, to always straightening their hair and very feminine. I had a child of my own, with a Spanish man. Our daughter turned out a beautiful caramel color. The same ex aunt said, “oh wow- she didn’t come out as dark as you did, she’s so pretty – looks like a real Indian girl!” I wasn’t going to let her talk to me like that, so I posted what she wrote on Facebook to everyone. She blocked me.

The first thing to question here before people say “I’m not even that dark!” Is what is wrong with darkness or dark skin? Darkness is relative based on the perceiver so ultimately none of it makes real sense. Being against dark skin is so random if you think about it and is just an excuse in this world to divide and attack and treat people unlovingly. Question where this belief comes from in your own mind. It’s important to question these beliefs and really get to the root of its origin.

I’m a black woman, my best friends are south Asian—sri lankan (Sinhalese and Tamil) and Bengali—one of my friends in particular is about the same complexion as this lady in the article, lighter than me, and they’ve made fun of her her whole life for her skin color. Her sister is darker than me and she has experienced hell. She’s super insecure because of her family’s remarks over the years. My other friends are very light and I’ve never heard them complain about anything like that. Very, very sad. I can honestly say today, even though there is tons of colourism in the African American community, I think Asia takes the cake in todays society with this racism amongst one another. Colonisation has left a nasty, dirty impact around the world. Places such as the Caribbean and some countries in the African continent are very mixed. It has thousands of people who are of both African and Asian heritage, but this is never really highlighted. It’s hardly ever highlighted because they want society to believe that people of different ethnic groups can not coexist and live in harmony without them. European and African mixture is one of the largest ethnic mixes, and that mixture is rapidly increasing. If dark skin people are hated so much by Europeans, why do they have children with them and obsess with mixed race people? African features are beautiful, and their various shades of brown skin tones are also beautiful. In India, majority is dark complexion, so they admire fair complexion, in fact very fair complexion, similar to in Western countries they use spray tan to get a brownish color for body because they don’t like very fair complexion. This is so upsetting. Dark skinned Indian people look great. This woman is beautiful. As a white British guy I don’t understand how any of this exists… pale frecked redheads are hot, and caramel coloured raven-haired girls are hot. From a purely aesthetics point, why can’t we appreciate both; but it goes so much further. From a cultural perspective there’s nothing more beautiful than a mixed baby: it means people from across the world came together, exchanged culture, and chose to love each other. Colorism is in every culture. The common denominator is: The lighter your skin, the better looking you are and you’ll live a better life. Those who say or believe otherwise can keep telling themselves such that will make them feel better, but the proof lies in the culture of the world. Case in point: Glutathione and skin lightening products are popular everywhere, skin darkening products are unheard of.
Colorism is definitely prevalent in the Latino community too. I’m Puerto Rican – my grandmother literally looked/s like Pocahontas (skin color and all) – but was disappointed that I didn’t have light hair, skin or colored eyes when I was born, even though my skin is so much on the fairer side that people mistaken me for white. Yes, colorism is definitely an issue. I am black and there is an elderly Indian lady who always speaks in my neighborhood. One day, she asked what part of Africa I was from and what I was mixed with 😮. I was literally scratching my head because she was very dark and I would have mistaken HER for being black. Not wanting to be disrespectful to my elders, I told her I was born in America, but some of my Ancestors were from Nigeria.
The issue runs much deeper than that, because you can choose not to date or breed with someone, and still have respect for them. Preference doesn’t necessarily equate to racism. And this colorism extends well beyond the dating world. It’s practically institutional. The real reason is supremacist mentality. I literally heard an Indian say before that they believe breeding with a White person will improve their race and breeding with a black person will downgrade their race.

I don’t agree with this assertion at all because Ram, Krishna and Shiva, the most revered gods in India, are depicted as dark in colour. Secondly the most popular film actresses/models in India like Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone again have a dark skin tone. Goddess Kali, the most worshipped goddess in India is also depicted with a dark skin tone. Fair skin tone is an obsession only amongst few communities and even in India, no one likes them.
