Are Cruise Ships Losing Money?

The cruise industry’s contribution to the U.S. economy in 2019 was on the rise, according to a new economic report by Cruise Lines International Association. However, in 2020, the industry will contribute less than half of what it did last year, facing an estimated 32 billion loss. Cruise companies like Carnival and Royal Caribbean have been hit hard by the Federal Reserves rate hikes, with Carnival losing over 2 billion in its latest quarter. Cruise lines are expected to continue debuting new ships in the near term, balancing debt refinancing and improving profit margins.

The high cost of Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world, is docked at Costa Maya Cruise Port in Mahahual, Quintana Roo state. If a cruise line goes bankrupt or ceases to operate, online details can become inaccessible, making it difficult for passengers to prove their owed money later. Cruise ships are making a comeback, with South Florida’s cruise companies buoyed by a surge in passengers but still paying. Cruise lines will have to lower prices in the second half of 2022 to fill ships due to a deep hole in cumulative bookings compared to 2019 levels.

Pollution and overtourism are not just problems in Venice, but also in the Balearic city of Palma. The financial losses caused by the pandemic and investments in new ships are not to be overlooked, but passenger income is affected. Disney has revealed that its cruise line was still stuck in the troubled waters of the pandemic last year, making a net loss of 325.8 million net. Hedge funds have lost more than 6 billion this year betting against cruise lines and hotels after underestimating the resilience of US consumers.
