A. Smith Bowman Distillery is hosting its 8th Annual Fathers Day Festival in Fredericksburg, VA, with admission being free. The festival features music, food, local crafts, the Barrel Regatta, and tastings of the Worlds Best Bourbon. Fathers can enjoy distillery tours, tastings, and the annual barrel regatta. A. Smith Bowman primarily uses standard 53-gallon barrels with 3 12 to 4 level charring, but some experiments are maturing in French oak, Mizunara oak, and ex-Port casks.

The festival will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, featuring live music, bourbon, and a Bourbon Barrel Regatta. Teams will create boats out of A. The Spanish Oak release in that collection was a bit overpowering, but this French Oak expression from Bowman is deep in color and flavor without going overboard. There are rich notes of cherry, grape, and vanilla on the nose, with a woody, buttery undertone. Those berry and fruit flavors continue onto the palate, along with oak, custard, honey, brown sugar, maple, and black pepper notes. The palate veers towards the sweeter side of the spectrum, but it’s bright and complex and never cloying. According to head distiller David Bock, using different types of barrels was the key. “Once blended together, the vanilla from the no-char barrels helps balance out the pepper notes from the charred barrels,” he said in a statement, “creating a dynamic and delicious blend.” I concur.

Some whiskey makers estimate that up to 70 percent of the flavor comes from the barrel, which makes endeavors like this more than just a marketing tool. But there is no doubt that this whiskey would have tasted very different if it was aged in Chinkapin or mizunara oak instead of French oak—and who knows, those could be on the A. Smith Bowman docket (but please no amburana, I’m beg of you). The bottom line is this whiskey is fantastic and you should go find a bottle now… which might be a little bit difficult because the online lottery to get one is now closed. But if you see this whiskey on the secondary market somewhere close to its $100 asking price, you should absolutely buy it.

Who distills Bowman Brothers?

The Bowman Family. Jacob Bowman was a farmer of German descent living on the Susquehannah River in New York when he was seized by American Patriots who thought he remained loyal to Britain.
