Will A Jet Ski Start Out Of Water?

Jet skis can be run out of water when they are already on the trailer. However, if the jet ski starts on land but not in water, it can cause issues such as an off-set reverse gate, impeller intake or exit nozzle debris, insufficient cylinder compression, or overheating the engine and exhaust system, leading to severe damage.

Starting a jet ski out of the water for a minimal time period should be less than 15-20 seconds if not on a hose and less than 2 minutes if hooked up to water. It is important to dewinterize your jet ski or summerize the waverunner after it has sat for many months over the winter. Always start the jet ski before turning on the water supply and turn off the water supply before turning off the jet ski to prevent water from entering the jet ski.

It is not recommended to start a jet ski when it is not in the water, as running the motor out of the water can cause damage to the engine and other components. There are several reasons why you would want to run a jet ski out of water, including leaving it in the water overnight if unavoidable, or starting any jet skis out of the water for a short time.

The reason to only run a SeaDoo 2 minutes or less out of the water is due to the carbon seal. Running it out of the water can cause damage to the engine. If you cannot start a WaveRunner out of the water without any damage, the manufacturer recommends not running the engine over 4,000 rpm.

In general, it is generally safe to run a PWC for 30 seconds or less out of the water and without being on a hose. If the PWC has a closed cooling system, it will typically run better out of the water as there is no load on the engine.
