Why So Many New Zealand Massive Yachts In Spain?

The I Dynasty, a 101-metre superyacht, has anchored at the Port of Malaga for the winter season. It is the first luxury vessel scheduled to visit the marina, and the 141-meter-long Yas has also visited the marina. The number of international visitors to the archipelago increased by 9.1% compared to 2022, with spending increasing by 16.4%. Spain retains a third yacht of possible Russian ownership, the 135-meter Crescent, in Tarragona. The Ministry of Transport reported the construction of a new superyacht marina in Spain’s Malaga underway.

The construction of new superyacht berthing facilities at Marina Club Ocean Village Marina Bay in Gibraltar is underway. The U.S. men’s gymnastics team won its first Olympic medal since 2008, and athletes from 184 countries will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Spanish publication Cronica Global claims a verbal pact has been reached between Team New Zealand, the Catalan government, and the Barcelona City Council.

Emirates Team New Zealand’s AC75 Taihoro has safely arrived at their team base in Barcelona after a 28-day journey traveling over 13,000 kilometers. The team’s Americas Cup boat has traveled over 20,000km to reach Barcelona, and the team’s captain, Graeme Richard, is estimated to be worth an estimated US9.7 billion.

Australia and New Zealand have mature yachting cultures similar to Europe, serving as entry points to broader Asia Pacific growth. The AC75 leaves New Zealand after a helter-skelter commissioning session in Auckland, sailing on 14 of 18 available days. The Cup boat will begin its journey to the Spanish coast while Team NZ relocates from one side of the world to the other.

How much do the America’s Cup boats cost?

In the world of competitive sailing, and more specifically the world’s richest boat race, open check books, cutting-edge technology and potential death is all fair game. Adventure publication Outside reports that each boat can cost anywhere between US$8 million and US$10 million to construct.

Sailing is an old pastime best enjoyed on calm waters accompanied by cheese, wine and someone you supposedly want to spend the rest of your life with. Wrong. In the world of competitive sailing, and more specifically the world’s richest boat race, open check books, cutting-edge technology and potential death is all fair game.

Adventure publication Outside reports that each boat can cost anywhere between US$8 million and US$10 million to construct. This figure is independent of the US$3 million entry fee, the cost of shipping boat equipment across the globe, maintenance, operations and incidentals. Each team can employ up to 130 people and it has been estimated that successfully leading an America’s Cup campaign can easily exceed the US$100 million mark. It’s believed that American businessman and CEO of Oracle Corporation, Larry Ellison, spent between US$250 million to US$300 million defending his team’s 2013 America’s Cup title.

The sadder statistics already confirm one death in 2013 alongside an endless array of high-speed capsizes causing serious injury to crew members. America’s Cup sailors have even given the feared high wind turning manoeuvre a name: “death zone”.

Does Auckland have more boats per capita than any other city in the world?

New Zealand has two main islands – North and South. The North Island is closer to the equator than the South Island, and therefore warmer. The greatest concentration of sailboats is in Auckland (Latitude about 36.5 degrees S), which is at the head of the Hauraki Gulf and surrounds Waitemata Harbor. It is said that there are more boats per capita in Auckland than in any other city in the world. The largest marina in Auckland, Westhaven, has roughly 1,600 ships and is said to be the largest marina in the southern hemisphere. Westhaven also hosts a yacht club – the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron – which is quite nice (reciprocity required).

Because of the concentration of sailboats, every type of boating expertise and product is available in Auckland and very conveniently as well. Greater Auckland dominates the New Zealand economy, and has roughly half the population of the country as well as its principal international airport. It is a small wonder that many of the world’s prominent racing captains hail from Auckland. Not to be missed in Auckland is the maritime museum, located in the small, but very nice Viaduct Marina downtown.

In spite of the prominence of Auckland, most international boats arrive from the north and clear Customs in Opua. We were told recently that Opua clears 80% of all entering sailing vessels. Opua is at the head of the Bay of Islands on the northeast coast of the North Island (Latitude about 35 degrees S). The town has a sizable marina, a 50 ton Travel Lift, two chandleries, and at least one provider of nearly every type of service. Meals are served most evenings at the local cruising club (reciprocity not required) and there is an excellent local cafe. Restaurants and accommodation are largely in Paihia, about 5km to the northwest. Our 56, Quester, is on the hard at the yard in Opua for the second time, and will be re-rigged there by a local rigger.

What city has the most yachts in the world?

Every year, Fort Lauderdale’s waters welcome more than 2,000 superyachts—private yachts measuring 80 feet or more. These grand vessels often pause in the city en route to the Caribbean for the winter or as part of their global journeys. With numerous marinas and shipyards expertly designed to accommodate these massive yachts, the city is the favored destination for the discerning yachting community.

The marine industry within Fort Lauderdale is nothing short of monumental. Boasting a thriving ecosystem of equipment manufacturers, vendors, yacht brokers, and service enterprises, this sector generates a staggering $9.7 billion in economic impact within Broward County. Impressively, the marine industry stands as the second-largest economic segment in Greater Fort Lauderdale, trailing only behind tourism.

Why is the next America’s Cup in Spain?

“As defender of the America’s Cup, we have always felt the responsibility to grow the event, the audience, and the sport of sailing on a global scale. Certainly, having the event hosted in a significant city such as Barcelona will allow us to propel the growth trajectory on the global sporting stage.”

“When thinking ahead to the 37th America’s Cup and the AC75s racing within a few hundred metres of the Barcelona beach, waterfront, and race village fan engagement zones, it will be nothing less than spectacular.”

As the leader of the Challenger of Record, Ainslie is also a fan of the event being hosted in Barcelona.

Why isn’t New Zealand hosting the America’s Cup?

The improvements to Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s waterfront, the Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter areas, have created attractive public spaces and further improved the connectivity between land and sea, leaving a waterfront destination that Kiwis and visitors love. This infrastructure legacy also provides facilities that can be used to host future major events.

While Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Aotearoa New Zealand were fortunate to be able to stage a safe and successful event during a global pandemic, the event did not make a return on the investment made. Fewer international Challengers than originally forecasted and the subsequent impacts from COVID-19, including international border restrictions and domestic Alert Level changes, all contributed to the event being not able to realise the expected return.

Various reports on the 36thAmerica’s Cup (AC36) have been published by the Crown and Auckland Council:

Further AC36 reports will be published as they are completed.

Which New Zealand boat is going to the America’s Cup 2024?

The America’s Cup is the oldest continuous competition in international sport, and among the world’s most prestigious sporting trophies. The 37th America’s Cup will be raced from 12 October 2024 as a first-to-seven-wins match-race series in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, between a yacht representing the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron and a yacht representing the yacht club that wins the Louis Vuitton Challenger Selections Series, also in Barcelona, in September 2024.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is again the defender of the America’s Cup after its yacht Te Rehutai, owned and sailed by the Emirates Team New Zealand syndicate, was the successful defender in the 36th America’s Cup, beating the challenger Luna Rossa, representing Circolo della Vela Sicilia, 7–3 in a first-to-seven series raced from 10 to 17 March 2021 in the Waitemata Harbour and Hauraki Gulf off Auckland, New Zealand.

Immediately after Te Rehutai achieved its seventh win in the 36th America’s Cup, the Chairman of Royal Yacht Squadron Racing, Bertie Bicket, issued a pre-arranged, “friendly” challenge to the Commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Aaron Young. This made Royal Yacht Squadron Racing Ltd the Challenger of Record for the next America’s Cup.

Why is Barcelona hosting the Americas Cup?

The reasons for Barcelona. The economic support of the Government of Spain, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona City Council, as well as the Diputació de Barcelona and Turisme de Barcelona, plus the endorsement of Barcelona Global, which has promoted and designed the candidacy, were other aspects that tipped the balance in favor of Barcelona.

The organizers of the 37th edition of the America’s Cup have valued the public-private collaboration demonstrated in the candidacy, the infrastructures that Barcelona already has, plus those that are being put in place for the event, and the strength of the Barcelona brand.

Thus, the Catalan capital will host the oldest international competition in the world, even older than the first modern Olympic Games. And also what is considered the most complicated and demanding sporting event.

How do America’s Cup boats go so fast?

Aerospace technology — including advanced aerodynamics, lightweight materials, wind tunnel testing and advanced simulation technology — has revolutionized the sport of America’s Cup racing. Today’s cup-class yachts use a wing that is more akin to an airplane’s wing or airfoil than to a traditional sail.
