Who Ship First Sailed Around The World?

Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, embarked on a historic journey to circumnavigate the globe in 1519-22. The expedition, which left Spain with about 270 men, aimed to find a western route to the Spice Islands. After losing two ships, Magellan and his crew became the first Europeans to enter the Pacific from the Atlantic after sailing around the tip of South America.

The first around the world sailing record for circumnavigation can be attributed to the surviving crew of Magellan’s expedition, including the last captain, Juan Sebastián Magellan. Magellan set sail from Spain in September 1519 with five ships to discover a western sea route to the Spice Islands. Although he was killed in the Philippines, one of his ships, the Nao Victoria, returned to port in 1522.

The Victoria, also known as Nao Victoria, was the first ship to successfully circumnavigate the world. Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the first known circumnavigation of the globe in September 1522. Magellan is often credited as being the first person to circumnavigate the globe, but the reality is that he did not complete the entire journey himself. The only ship in the fleet to complete the circumnavigation was the Nao Victoria.

In summary, Ferdinand Magellan’s voyage marked a significant milestone in the history of sailing and the discovery of the Pacific Ocean.
