Princess Cruises has announced the sale of two of its ships, Sun Princess and Sea Princess, to undisclosed buyers. Sun Princess is a new and bespoke ship platform designed to embrace Princess heritage while boldly pushing into the future with iconic, elegant, and pure Anne Kalosh design. The ships have been sold to Japan’s Peace Boat, according to a broker. Princess Cruises did not disclose the buyers, but the sales are part of Carnival Corp. The new Sun Princess will be Princess Cruises’ largest ever cruise ship, taking over the title currently held by the 145,000-ton Discovery Princess. The 175,000-ton newbuild will accommodate over 4,300 guests and feature Adam Coulter.

The Sphere-class cruise ship is a class of cruise ships currently under construction that will enter service with Princess Cruises in February 2024. Princess first set sail in the Mediterranean in 1985, and to celebrate the 40th anniversary the new Star Princess joins sister-ship Sun Princess in the Mediterranean for her debut season of cruising. Her maiden voyages depart August 4, 2025, sailing a nine-day Grand Mediterranean voyage to Italy and Greece roundtrip from Rome, followed by a variety of 10-day cruises, also roundtrip from Rome, that visit iconic destinations such as Florence, Barcelona and Mykonos.

Fincantieri in its announcement said the Sun Princess “is ready to sail the seas.” Princess Cruises, however, reports that the “ship does need to remain alongside in the shipyard to allow for additional technical work.” As such, they are now delaying the first revenue cruise till February 28. The ship has been docked in Monfalcone, Italy since January 16 after completing four days of sea trials.
